NRMA says worrying number of car insurance claims during school pick-up time

School crossing in Australia.

New research from the NRMA shows that car accidents peak during school pick-up time. These worrying statistics reveal that nearly 40% of car collisions occur between 1pm and 5pm, peaking at 3pm.

In light of this information, the Aussie insurance provider is urging parents and carers doing the school run to take extra care on the road.

Insurance executive general manager, Luke Gallagher said that this comes as a timely reminder, as the 2021 school year starts.

“We understand everyone leads busy lives and we’re all rushing to pick-up the children from school,” he said. "However, drivers need to be patient, allow extra time to travel and must follow the road rules to ensure the safety of children, pedestrians and themselves.”

Safety tips

Some tips the NRMA gives to parents and carers doing the school run are:

  • If possible, carpool with others to avoid doing the school run Monday to Friday
  • If you have time to spare, park away from the school and walk to it with your child
  • Remember to remain calm when caught in traffic
  • If you’re not a parent or carer, try to leave home earlier or later to avoid the school run.

Safe driving and car insurance

Another reason to drive safely is to keep your driving record intact. When calculating your car insurance premium, insurance providers will look at your driving history.

If you have previously been involved in any accidents or incidents, your insurance premiums may be higher. Or if you are involved in any in the future, then your insurance premium may go up in the next insurance period. Plus, if you are involved in an at-fault accident this will also affect your no claims bonus (if you have one).
