Suncorp brand Bingle Go pilots new innovative car insurance

A young woman sits behind the steering wheel of a car. She smiles as she looks over her shoulder. A young man sits in the passenger seat, looking at his phone, smiling.

Owned by insurance giant Suncorp, online insurer Bingle Go has this week announced that it will be piloting an innovative new app-based insurance, for people who don’t just rely on their car to get around.

“Bingle Go is an evolution of a traditional comprehensive car insurance product with additional features and functionality that protects and rewards customers when they’re both travelling by car and by other modes of transport,” said Suncorp’s chief executive of insurance product and portfolio, Lisa Harrison.

How does Bingle Go work?

Designed with the modern city dweller in mind, the Bingle Go + car cover policy is unique in that it is app-based and works as a monthly subscription. Just like your Netflix or Stan, it renews automatically each month and you can cancel it at any time.

The policy includes both insurance for your car and cover for when you’re on the go, but not driving. The latter is called Go cover and provides:

  • Up to $1,000 of personal valuables cover for when you’re commuting, not in your car
  • Up to $5,000 excess cover when using a hire car or other car
  • Liability cover for third-party property when commuting using a mobility device (e.g. a skateboard, bike or e-scooter)

It should be noted that Go cover only covers you for incidents that happen in Australia.

Bingle Go + car cover

The + car cover part of Bingle Go’s policy is comprehensive car insurance that provides protection for damage as a result of:

  • driving accidents
  • nature (e.g. storms, fire, flooding)
  • theft/malicious damage

One thing to highlight is that Bingle Go’s comprehensive car insurance does not provide breakdown cover. So if you want breakdown cover or roadside assistance, then you will have to purchase it separately from another insurance provider.

Bingle Go’s innovative app

Co-designed with Suncorp’s insurtech partner Trōv, Bingle’s Go app uses innovative telematic technology to detect what mode of transport you are using and what distance you travel. All with the aim to determine whether you qualify for mobility bonus points.

These are points that you earn for using non-car transport, including public transport (buses, trains or ferries), cycling, walking or running, scooters, skateboards, roller skates and so forth.

For each non-car qualifying journey, you will earn one mobility point. You can earn a maximum of 60 mobility points each month, for which you will receive a 20% discount on your premium the following month.

Your discount each month will be determined by the number of points you earned in the previous one. So for instance, 30 points will get you a 10% discount and 15 points will get you a 5% discount off your next month’s base premium.

You can sign up for Bingle Go via the app, which can be downloaded via either Google Play or the App Store. After filling out all the relevant details you will be given a quote and if you decide to go ahead with Bingle Go, you’ll then make your first monthly payment.
