As GIO’s premier level of car insurance you can expect some neat features like lifetime new car replacement, access to GIO’s platinum hire car service and your choice of repairer, all of which is made more affordable by generous online, family, senior and no claim discounts.

GIO Platinum Car Insurance will cover not only your car but your keys if they are stolen and any personal property within your car up to the value of $500. Windscreen cover also comes as standard as part of this policy and you are given the freedom to select a repairer you personally trust if your car needs fixing. If you want greater control over your cover, GIO will talk it out with you beforehand and come to an agreed value for your precious set of wheels.

If the worst happens and your new car is stolen or written off, GIO will replace it with a brand new car of the same make and model just as long as you’re the first registered owner and had it is insured with GIO within 13 months of purchasing the car. The main thing to note about Platinum Car Insurance is that it doesn’t come with roadside assistance as standard but is available as an additional extra for $90 a year.

GIO eases the strain on your wallet by applying a few discounts to this policy. First off, by taking the policy out online you’ll earn a 10% discount straight off the bat. If you’re under the age of 25 and an older family member is already a comprehensive or Platinum Car Insurance policy holder, GIO will shave an extra 10% off your premium. Finally, if you work to keep your driving record squeaky clean, you could be eligible for a no claims discount!

Who is it good for

If you’re a young driver, insuring your own car can get pretty pricey so make the most of GIO’s 10% family discount for drivers under the age of 25. Alternatively, if you’ve recently bought a new car and want to make sure that, in the event it is written off or stolen, it will be replaced then GIO’s lifetime new car replacement feature makes Platinum Car Insurance an attractive option for you.

Any catches

Keep in mind that roadside assistance or monthly premiums are optional extras as part of this policy and will cost you a few extra dollars to take up. It is also a good idea to keep GIO up to date with a list of drivers otherwise if you lend your car to a friend and they are at-fault for an accident, you’ll be forced to fork out for a $1,400 unlisted driver excess.

    Don't use GIO if you want a trustworthy company

    A policy payment didnt go through due to a card issue and they forgot to email me about the issue. Two months later they sent me a email at 11pm to let me know that my policy is cancelled as of 11:59pm, leaving my car uninsured overnight. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

    Nothing more than a rort.

    Have been insured with Suncorp for 3 years through GIO. My car was recently in a minor accident and had to be towed to repairers. Firstly I was told it was going to be written off and to come empty the car out and then 2 days later I was told they won't be writing it off but they cant repair it either so they offered a cash setlement which is half of what the agreed value is. I was told to come get the car (which wont start and had to be towed) and that they will no longer insure the car as it now has pre existing damage. They then said they can tow the car and dump it out the front of my house. Talked to the complaints department who told me its in all their policies that they can offer cash settlements instead of writing vehicles off when they cant repair them. How is that legal and what is insurance for if they don't repair or write it off? No point having insurance if you aren't covered.

    Less than helpful.

    GIO, you're the worst! Our car got into minor incident. We called YOU hoping that you could help us. But no, instead we waited ages and we were the one who had to reach to you for an update and when we called, you told the car is not repairable and its been statutory written off. You’re offering us $2,000 and not even sympathetic about the situation. You cancelled our registration without our consent, let alone informed us about it. We can’t see our car. You refuse give us any information about the car and why it’s not drivable anymore. The car was working fine. We used it for a whole week before we gave it to you and nothing was wrong with it, only the booth wouldn’t open without using a key. Now you can’t even tell us what is wrong with the car. We haven’t agreed to anything and yet you unregistered our car. GIO, you are LESS THAN HELPFUL.
