Home Buildings Insurance |
NRMA Home Plus Insurance will give your home and its extras like pools, garages and sheds the best care around. This policy offers underinsurance protection just in case you think you’ve valued your home incorrectly as well as a lifetime guarantee on authorised repairs. Plus, if you’ve managed to keep a good claims history, you’ll be able to access a no claims bonus. Best of all, NRMA took out a 2023 Mozo Experts Choice Award for this policy in the Exceptional Quality Home & Contents Insurance category for two consecutive years.
There are two levels of NRMA Home Insurance: the standard cover and 'Plus' policy option. Both options provide cover for your home for listed events that include fires, vandalism, leaks, flooding, emergency repairs, plus temporary accomodation should you need to vacate your home. The Plus policy simply includes a few extra circumstances and higher limits to your coverage.
If you’ve got a garden and are proud of it, you’ll be happy to know that NRMA Home Plus Insurance covers your plants, tree or shrubs for up to $2,000. Fusion is also covered under this policy for things like pool pumps and aircon, as is accidental damage and underinsurance (up to 25% of the sum insured) just in case repair and replacement costs go beyond your initial valuation.
If you’re planning any future renovations or ever need to rebuild your home, NRMA Home Plus Insurance also offers covers building materials and rebuilding fees. Lock replacements and debris removal are also covered under this policy along with funeral expenses and many other unexpected events your home may experience.
But to make your cover a little more personal, you also have the option to add pet cover to your policy just in case anything happens to your cat or dog. You can also add some of the Plus policy features onto the standard cover for an additional premium.
NRMA Home Plus Insurance is a good choice for anyone looking to give their home thorough protection against nearly everything.
As NRMA Home Plus Insurance cover the cost of building materials, it’s important you know that you will only be able to receive is up to $5,000 (or $1,000 under the standard policy) if an insured event causes loss or damage to the materials.
If you do have plans for any major renovations, it might be a good idea to list this separately with your policy and to let NRMA know once the job is completed.

They seem to have strict conditions for a claim to be accepted. We had several claims knocked back since they were considered maintenance issues. For example, we had extensive leaking in one room which was caused by a waterproofing failure under the floorboards of a verandah. They considered it a maintenance issue. I guess we could tear up the floorboard every other year to check the waterproofing!

We lost our home in a house fire. My husband has chronic and severe illness and we were all distraught and depressed after the fire. The company kept contacting us for a list of all the antiques that we lost and for reports on the expected cost of replacing the home that was lost. When they learned from investigators that there were no suspicious circumstances, and in view of the fact that we were struggling to cope, they contacted us by phone to let us know that they were happy to pay us out for the full amount of both the buildings and contents insurance. The staff were so empathetic and considerate of our needs, and this minimised our stress.

NRMA does not cover most incidents related to damage to homes. I have had claims rejected caused by water leakage ("seepage" is not covered.) by neglect by tenants, and by leaking bathroom floors. What DO they cover? Very expensive for no cover!

NRMA Insurance is a renowned and reliable company who has effectively supported me with my insurance needs. They provide competitive packages and have great supportive resources. On the negative side, they're slow with enquiries and it's hard to speak to a human when you need help.

When I've called them with a claim I have found them to be understanding, kind and reassuring. However, their premiums may be a little higher than other insurers. I have stuck with them over the years because they are reliable.
