Keep your belongings safe with an affordable contents insurance policy from RACQ. This policy offers new-for-old replacement on contents like appliances, furniture, electronics or jewellery, and covers events including theft or vandalism as well as storm, fire and flood damage. RACQ Contents Insurance also comes with a bunch of discounts for seniors, people living in an apartment or anyone who buys their policy online.

When it comes which of your belongings are covered, RACQ has a long list of inclusions. A few items on the list include: clothing and bags, household appliances and electronics, furniture, carpets and curtains, jewellery and watches, sport equipment, and garden tools.
These items are insured against events like accidental breakage of glass, fire, lightning, storms (including storm surge, which is a very rare inclusion), floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, leaks, riots and vandalism. If you’d like to be insured for accidental loss and damage – like if you trip and knock your brand new TV off the wall – then you can add that cover as an optional extra.
You can also add Advanced Cover to your policy for additional accidental cover and burnt out motors in electrical appliances.
Keep in mind there are some general exclusions. For example, damage done by a computer virus or normal ocean activity like king tides or erosion, as well as a few exclusions specific to certain events or items. Make sure you read your PDS carefully to know just what you’re covered for.
Now for the really good stuff: discounts. There are a whole bunch of ways to save on your RACQ contents insurance, including a $25 discount for buying your policy online, a 13% discount for combing contents with home insurance, and a 10% premium reduction for installing a 24/7 alarm system. You can also bag a lower premium if you’re a senior or live in an apartment.
When you buy an RACQ insurance policy, you also become an RACQ member, which comes with benefits including discounts on theme park and movie tickets and 24 hour domestic travel assistance.
Keep in mind that this is a contents insurance policy and doesn’t cover the structure of your house. So while it could be a great option for renters, homeowners might want to consider a combined home and contents insurance policy if they'd like protection for their building as well.
If you prefer to pay your premium by the month, you can do so, but there will be an extra charge to do this. You also aren’t protected against underinsurance with this policy, so it’s up to you to make sure you choose the appropriate level of cover for your needs.
One other tricky piece of fine print to be aware of is the cover for power surges. You’re covered for a power surge if it’s caused by lightning, but not if it’s caused by your electricity provider or problems with your power line – so read your PDS carefully!

I would never recommend this company. I looked at the other reviews and I don’t believe they are kosher. All the people have written them have not had need to claim. Three years on, and Racq has still not settled a claim for my family member who had insurance with this company. When she made the claim, they told her she was not covered. Upon speaking to another insurer, they advised her to go back to Racq because she was covered under the policy. Nearly a year later, and they still have not resolved the IRD. She escalated this to the CEOs office who, promised to settle the claim in early April and still have not. She lost all her belongings and had to go into living into temporary commendation. The huge financial strain has been enormous. To date she has dealt with seven people in Racq all promising to resolve the claim and no one has. She has now received a really offensive email from the in-house solicitor who has made the claim experience extremely difficult and declared to pay out the claim she needs better pictures of all items lost and quibbling about petty amounts of money when she lost everything . He has also demonstrated very unethical behaviour. I certainly would never recommend this company after seeing what they have put my friend through. The culture of it is not to pay at any cost to their customer who pays for the insurance . She is dealing with the ceos office and like any company the culture is set at the top.
