Online share trading app Superhero has expanded its offering beyond Australian securities with this morning’s announcement of its launch into US shares.

Superhero’s 80,000 users can now trade over 4,500 U.S shares and ETFs for $0 brokerage using its Live Account, though a 0.50% foreign exchange fee will apply for transfers made between Australian and US dollars.

The move means Superhero joins other share trading platforms like CMC Markets and Stake in offering a brokerage-free way for Australians to buy US stocks, which is proving an in-demand feature for many younger investors.

According to a recent survey of 1,013 Australians commissioned by Superhero, 17% of 18-45 year olds already own US shares compared to 39% who own Australian shares.

Additionally, 34% of respondents said that they were interested in investing in the future, with US-based global tech companies like Apple, Netflix and Tesla among the shares at the top of wish lists for prospective investors.

“The past few years have seen a real shift towards investing in both Australian and U.S. shares, and we’ve had customers asking us when we were going to launch U.S. trading - almost from day one of launching Superhero,” said co-founder and chief executive, John Winters.

“Our premium features, like real-time PayID funding and live market data for no extra cost, will now be coupled with real-time FX transfers so investors can invest in global markets in minutes, not days.”

Today’s announcement is another major milestone for Superhero since it launched last September, during which it has cemented its position among a group of lower-cost online brokers in Australia.

Superhero’s brokerage rate of $5 per trade is one of lowest in the Mozo database for ASX-listed shares at present, while its brokerage fees for trading local ETFs are currently $0 for purchases and $5 when they are sold.

In fact, despite having been on the market for less than a year, Superhero has already picked up two 2021 Mozo Experts Choice Awards - Online Share Trading for Casual ASX Trader and Casual ETF Trader.
