Australia Post says start shopping now, before Christmas chaos

two people in red and green exchange christmas presents early to beat shipping delays

With Christmas only three months away, Australia Post chief executive officer, Paul Graham warns that the Aussie shoppers should start their preparation for the silly season now.

While retail stores might still be struggling in the light of COVID-19, online shopping goes from strength to strength. A rising cost of living may have resulted in a bit of a tighter grip on some hard-earned cash, but the e-commerce industry in Australia brought in $4.14 billion in August alone.

Thanks to overextended supply chains and an historically low unemployment rate (the lowest seen since 1974, in fact), the real concern is how our gifts and goodies will get to us.

AusPost prepares for Christmas rush

Australia Post isn’t leaving things to chance this festive season, preparing for the oncoming package rush with big hiring plans. Planning to hire between 5,000 and 7,000 people to tackle the challenge of delivering all that mail, Graham says the company is beginning recruitment earlier than normal.

With a focus on the youth market and retirees, Australia Post is hoping to stem the issue before it arises.

Meanwhile, the earlier the better when it comes to Christmas shopping. Allowing more time for delivery allows a better chance to locate any packages that may be misplaced, and plenty of time to deal with any stock issues on the end of the supplier.

Score rewards points with your early Christmas shopping

Starting to check off that Christmas gift list? It might be time to consider the rewards credit cards that deserve their spots on Santa’s “nice” list.

According to marketing researcher MiQ, 34% of Australians are planning to spend more this Christmas. This is largely due to accommodations for inflation, but also because of a growing sense of financial stability.

If you are looking to spend, you may as well reap the rewards!

We’ve pulled aside some credit cards notable for their rewards systems. If you’re strategic with your present shopping, you could set yourself up for some serious return on investment: think airfares for that overseas trip you’ve been planning, or an upgrade on your next hotel stay.
