If you’re on the market for a new rewards credit card, a bonus points offer might be exactly what you need to scratch your points-loving itch. 

So which credit cards come with bonus points?  

Well, last month six credit card launched fresh bonus points offers to new card members.

  • American Express introduced a 90,000 bonus Qantas Points offer on its Explorer Card, along with a juicy $300 cashback. Customers just need to apply online by 31 May 2021, are approved and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first 3 months from approval. Bear in mind, this card comes with a 20.74% p.a. purchase rate and $395 annual fee. 
  • Amex also launched a 55,000 bonus Qantas Points offer on its Qantas Ultimate Card, when customers apply, are approved and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months. Also note, this card also comes with a 20.74% p.a. purchase rate and an even higher annual fee of $450.
  • ANZ introduced a 180,000 bonus Rewards Points offer on its Rewards Black credit card, for new customers that spend $2,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months. This card has a 20.24% p.a. purchase rate and $375 annual fee ($0 in the first year). 
  • ANZ also updated its bonus points offer to 120,000 bonus Rewards Points on its ANZ Rewards Platinum credit card. This offer is available to new customers that spend $1,500 on eligible purchases on the card within the first three months. This card comes with a 20.24% p.a. purchase rate and $95 annual fee ($0 in the first year). 
  • Coles launched a 20,000 bonus flybuys Points for new customers that spend $500 on eligible purchases in the first 60 days on its Rewards Mastercard. This card has a 19.99% p.a. purchase rate and $99 annual fee ($0 in the first year). 
  • Virgin Money introduced a up to 100,000 bonus Velocity points for new customers on its Velocity High Flyer credit card. Cardholders can earn 25,000 points per month when they spend $3,500 on eligible purchases in the first four months. This card comes with a 20.74% p.a. purchase rate and $289 annual fee. 

But these providers aren't the only ones with credit cards offering up bonus points.

After the choice of rewards program that suits you? With St.George that’s exactly what you could get. The Amplify Signature credit card comes equipped with not one but two bonus points offers for new customers - and it's up to you which one you choose. For those looking to join St.George’s Amplify program, there is the chance to score 100,000 bonus points in the first year and an additional 100,000 bonus points in the second year as long as you spend $12,000 on eligible purchases each year. On the other hand, there is a Qantas Points offer out there for frequent flyers (or those looking to sign up). Earn up to 90,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from approval. It’s important to note that with the Amplify program, cardholders could earn 1.5 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases, whereas with the Qantas Frequent Flyer alternative customers could earn 0.75 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. But no matter which option you choose, there is a 19.74% p.a. purchase rate (21.49% cash advance rate) and a $279 annual fee to factor in each year.

With Westpac’s Altitude Platinum credit card, there are plenty of bonus points up for grabs across three different loyalty programs. With this card, there is the choice between earning points on Westpac’s Altitude Program, Qantas Frequent Flyer or Velocity- and each comes with its own bonus points offer for new customers! For customers interested in the Altitude program, there is a 80,000 bonus point offer when you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from approval. Alternatively, there is a 60,000 bonus Qantas Points offer or 60,000 bonus Velocity Points offer when you meet the same spending criteria. Keep in mind that points earnings differ between these rewards programs. On the Altitude points system, you could earn 1 point per $1 spent on eligible purchases, while with Qantas Frequent Flyer and Velocity you could earn 0.5 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. The annual fee on this card varies depending on which rewards program you choose: for Altitude it is $150 ($99 in the first year) and for Qantas Frequent Flyer and Velocity it is $200 ($149 in the first year). Also remember, this card comes with a 20.74% p.a. purchase rate (21.49% cash advance rate).

Are credit card rewards points worth it? 

Despite overseas travel being restricted, credit card rewards points can still be worth it in 2021.  

Whether you decide to stash them up for when international travel returns (as long as they don’t expire), spend them on domestic trips or exchange them for gift cards, it's all about making sure you get the best bang for your buck. 

Because remember, you’re doing the hard yards when it comes to earning points so it's crucial you use what you’ve earnt at the right time.
