Mozo snapshot

If you like your banking to be simple and straight up, then you’ll love the new StraightUp credit card from NAB. Instead of paying interest on purchases like most credit cards in the market, with the StraightUp card, there’s a set monthly fee which ranges from $10 to $20 a month depending on your credit limit. There are also none of the usual credit card fees like annual or late payment fees and if you don’t use your card at all during a statement period or have zero balance, you won’t even be charged the monthly fee.

It's for these features that NAB was awarded the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Credit Card Innovation.

Key features

One of the best features of NAB’s StraightUp card is that you can enjoy interest free spending as this card doesn’t charge interest. Instead you pay a set monthly fee which is based on your credit limit - $10 for $1,000, $15 for $2,000 and $20 for a $3000 limit.

The card also comes with a predictable payment feature which means that when you have a balance owing on the card, the minimum payment required is fixed.  This is also based on the credit limit of the card. For a card with a limit of $1000, you have to pay at least $35 towards any balance due, $75 for a $2000 limit and $110 for a card with a limit of $3000.

Another top feature is that if you don’t have a balance owing and you don’t use the StraightUP card at all in a statement period NAB will reverse the monthly fee.

Keep in mind that the card can only be used to make purchases online or in person as it doesn't come with a cash advance option.

Who is it good for

The StraightUp credit card is linked to the Visa network so you can make purchases in Australia and overseas wherever Visa is accepted. It could also a great option for anyone who regularly shops online at international stores as you won’t pay foreign currency fees on transactions.

Any catches

While you will not be paying any interest, just be mindful that over time the monthly fee does add up so be sure that the credit limit you select is appropriate for your spending level and that you can repay any debt in a timely manner.

There is no rewards program with the StraightUP card so if you are a big spender and want extras like complimentary insurance and rewards perks or access to a credit limit higher than $3,000 you might want to compare the other NAB credit cards available.
