Whether you're an individual or business needing car insurance, motorcycle insurance, cover for your boat, caravan, farm, business, home, or upcoming travel, NRMA Insurance can sort you out. In addition to the insurance services NRMA Insurance offers to the public, it also conducts research through the IAG Research Centre focused on improving vehicle safety, increasing security and simplifying repairs.
This long standing insurance company is probably best-known for its car insurance policies. NRMA Insurance can set you up for CTP as well as voluntary third party property car insurance or a comprehensive policy.
When it comes to comprehensive cover – the highest grade of car insurance – NRMA Insurance has two options: Comprehensive or Comprehensive Plus. As the names suggest, Comprehensive Plus incorporates a few additional features you might want, kind of like a bundle of optional extras.
This will differ depending on which policy option you choose, but there are elements included in both the standard and Plus offers. This includes cover for:
Damages to your car and others after an accident
Fire, storm and flood damage
Vandalism and theft
Hire car after a theft or not-at-fault accident
Towing
Emergency repairs (up to $800)
Personal items (up to $500) and baby seats or capsules (up to $500) inside the car
Work tools in the car (up to $1,500)
New car replacement if yours is written-off in the first two years
Any insurable incidents while operating as a rideshare driver for companies like Uber or Ola (you’ll have to disclose this when you take out a policy and pay an extra premium).
Other inclusions which only come with NRMA Insurance’s Comprehensive Plus policy are:
Hire cover cover in any circumstances
Excess-free glass repairs
Taxi fare (up to $250) to get home after an accident
Higher cover thresholds for some items
Like most car insurance providers, NRMA Insurance tries to determine how likely you are to make a claim and sets a premium based on that. The more risky you are on paper as a drive, the higher your premium. A few of the factors which influence this include:
Demographic features including age, gender, driving experience and claims history of the owners and any listed drivers of your vehicle
The age, make and model of your car, as well as its condition
Where your vehicle is kept (garaging it will keep costs down)
What your car is used for (expect a premium hike if you use it for ridesharing)
Whether you have finance on your car and the type of finance
Whether you’ve nominated agreed or market value (agreed will cost you more, but could result in a larger payout if the car is written-off)
How you choose to pay your premium (monthly or annual)
Any excesses or special conditions that apply (like if you choose a higher excess in order to pay a lower premium, and vice versa).
Naturally, the policy type and any optional extras you choose will also impact premium costs.
NRMA Insurance has a few discounts available to help sweeten the pot. For starters, there’s an online discount that could save you up to 10% on your first year’s premium if you take out a new car insurance policy online.
And if you’ve been a loyal customer for five consecutive years, you may qualify for a relationship discount of between 5-10% depending on the number of years you've held an eligible policy.
Finally, there's the multi-product discount that could apply if you have two or more eligible products insured with NRMA Insurance, such as car and home insurance. With the multi-product discount, you could save between 5-15% depending on the number of NRMA Insurance policies you hold.
T&Cs apply to all discounts, so be sure to check your PDS or give NRMA Insurance a ring to find out more.
This procedure is similar to many other insurance companies. At the time of the incident, you should:
Collect the names, ID, contact numbers, insurance info and car registration details of anyone involved in or witness to the accident
Take photos of any damages and the crash site
File a police report if necessary.
Next, have all your insurance and personal info handy to make a claim either online or over the phone. If you need towing or repairs immediately after the incident, you should also arrange this through the NRMA Insurance.
If your claim is successful after an assessment, it will be settled by the NRMA Insurance covering costs to repair or replace your vehicle, or you receiving the equivalent amount as a payment.
Yes, modifications are covered under both of NRMA Insurance’s comprehensive car insurance policies.
Windscreen cover is included automatically in NRMA Insurance’s Comprehensive Plus insurance. You won’t be required to pay excess when claiming for windscreen, sunroof or other glass repairs under this policy.
It’s also included in the basic Comprehensive policy, but you will need to stump up the excess fee before repairs go ahead. If you want to avoid this cost (which can sometimes be greater than the cost of repairs) you can add excess-free windscreen and glass cover to your policy as an optional extra. Just remember, this will increase your premium.
Yes, you can choose to pay annually or monthly with NRMA Insurance car insurance. However, paying in monthly instalments may come with a fee.
You can get in touch with NRMA Insurance 24/7 via the NRMA Insurance Helpline (for emergencies), on the claims line, via email or by chatting with a customer service representative through the website.

I have been a Member of the NRMA for all of the years that I have been driving and I have been driving for since I was 16-17 years old, and I am now 75 years old. I have had no problems with the NRMA nor its Insurance. But I just do not know as to why my Car Insurance costs a lot more than my Brothers' who are also with NRMA Insurance. I live in Berkeley, a nearby southern suburb of Wollongong, and my Brothers live at Warilla (Lake Illawarra) within the Shellharbour area. I have been told that I live in a "City" area so my Car Insurance costs more. But Shellharbour has been declared a "City" as well. So my does my Car Insurance in Wollongong cost a lot more than it would in Shellharbour ???

I purchased a TPP policy from NRMA Insurance when the vehicle I had purchased six months prior was due for rego renewal in two weeks. As a long-time client I wanted to move over to them as the current TPP was with QBE. When I bought the policy, I was asked when I wanted the policy to start, I said on the date the rego was due, as I could see no point in having two concurrent policies for the interim two weeks. Immediately after I hung up, I realised that if I had kept the policy with QBE I would have been eligible for a saving of $231 as a good driver premium. I immediately rang NRMA Insurance back and asked that the policy be cancelled and explained why. I assumed that I would naturally have a cooling off period, as the policy had been purchased literally minutes before. I was told that the salesperson who sold me the policy had immediately sent the policy to Service NSW and that they could not cancel the policy, as my mechanic had forwarded the Roadworthy to Service NSW earlier in the day. Their Customer Service Department (sic) said that for me to activate my cooling off period, I would have to drive the 78 km round trip to the nearest office and hand in my plates and cancel the rego. They would then activate my cooling off period and cancel the policy. Obviously I was pretty annoyed by their reaction and lack of concern for my rights and sent an email asking for an inquiry, which was rejected with a condescending, we can’t do anything about it, not our problem reply. I immediately emailed again and asked for the decision to be reviewed, pointing out that they had caused the problem, I was entitled to a cooling off period under the Act, and they needed to offer an acceptable solution. I suggested a one off discount to cover the $231 they had cost me. This was refused, they then offered me a $100 voucher to be sent by mail as compensation and stated that this was the end of the matter, no further correspondence will be received. This was a lie, they did not send the voucher. During all these interactions, I felt as though I was talked down to, and treated as a nuisance that should go away. No one cared for my rights. If you are considering using NRMA Insurance, I would recommend you do not! Check if you are eligible for a Good Driver Premium with either QBE or another provider. NRMA Insurance will not offer you one. If you have problems with the policy, they will treat you with indifference. Customer Care and Customer Support for them are just polite terms to get rid of the problem asap. They give neither Care or Support.

Better than many others. However, even after being a member for many many years and having a good history, the premiums still seem too high and go up instead of down and the member discounts etc are very very few and far between and there are always excuses from all insurers. They, like other insurers seem to offer better offers to brand new customers. I have made two claims in a long history for things that were not the fault of myself or any other driver of my vehicle. The second time was sort of okay but the first claim experience for a big claim where another vehicle wrote off my car and left me injured and out of pocket has still left a shadow on my feelings about insurers. I guess I would say to insurers but unfortunately I feel I could say this till I'm blue in the face like others and nothing would change is to look after your current members first and foremost.
