RAC Comprehensive Car Insurance offers a top-quality level of cover with a couple of big discounts that reward environmentally conscious customers who are prepared to buy their car insurance policy online. This policy comes stacked with features that give you the flexibility to take control over your car insurance policy for a competitive price. What else would you expect from a 2019 Mozo Experts Choice Award winning policy? And don't forget, RAC also took out top gongs in all six categories of the 2020 Mozo People's Choice Awards.

Key features

With RAC Comprehensive Car Insurance you will have the option to dump your excess completely or set it as high as $2,000 and you’ll also get the flexibility to choose who repairs your car if you are involved in accident.

If you’ve recently bought a fresh set of wheels, RAC will replace your car with another new one, if it is written off or stolen within two years of purchasing it. This policy also comes with a few generous cover caps. For example, if your car keys are stolen you’ll be covered up to the value of $2,000 to replace them. Trailers which are damaged in an accident are also covered up to the value of $2,000.

A unique feature of RAC Comprehensive Car Insurance is the discount you can accrue by insuring a low emissions car, which range from 5% to 25% depending on the age of the car. RAC will also reward you for signing up online, instantly slashing $100 off your premium.

This policy also covers anyone who drives your car through RAC’s open driver cover which is pretty handy if you’re regularly roadtripping and wouldn’t mind sharing the driving load. Just be aware that if a driver is under the age of 25 you could have to pay between $300 and $650 young driver excess if they’re involved in an accident.

It is also worth noting that it will cost you more to pay your premiums monthly than if you were to do so annually. In terms of optional extras, you’ll have to elect for rental costs following an accident (although you're covered for hire cars after theft and fire). You'll also need to opt-in for roadside assistance if you want that covered by RAC.

Who is it good for

This policy is only available if you’re in WA. It's a good policy for any driver wanting comprehensive cover, but customers who have taken the environmentally friendly route and secured themselves a low emissions car will get added value from this policy. To check if your car is eligible for the discount, head to the Fuel Efficient Car Discount hub on RAC’s website.

Any catches

It is worth remembering that without all rental costs covered as standard with this policy, you could be caught car-less after an accident. RAC is also one of the few insurance companies without a 24/7 claims service, so you might have to exercise a little bit of patience during the insurance claim process.

    Excellent value for money

Recently, my car was stolen and written off by the idiot who stole it. RAC had sorted out the claim with the absolute minimum of fuss and paid out my policy amount back into my bank account in 8 days. Really good experience dealing with RAC. I can't think of any reason to change insurance to another company.

Reputable company but has gotten expensive.

Excellent product and service if you’re a new customer but once your first year is finished the premium suddenly jumps up a couple of hundreds while covering a little smaller value. Online portal is better to deal with than the person on the phone who’s always in a hurry to get rid of you. They’re not rude but just uninterested in helping you. They won’t give the same discount over the phone as the one online - obviously trying to make you use their technology.
