What should I know about RACV travel Insurance?

What your policy covers

Of course, it comes down to the plan and cover type that you choose to purchase. But some of the benefits you can expect to be covered for in most RACV travel insurance policies include:

Keep in mind that RACV’s most basic travel insurance option, Travel Care, does not cover a number of those benefits, including loss of travel documents, accidental death or disability, and cancellation fees and lost deposits.

What pre-existing medical conditions are covered

Your RACV travel insurance policy will automatically cover 23 pre-existing medical conditions, as long as you haven’t been hospitalised for the condition in the past 24 months and they’re not related to any conditions you list as part of RACV’s medical screening process. The RACV PDS has a complete list of these conditions, which includes some common ones, like allergies, migraines and coeliac disease.

For medical conditions that aren’t covered automatically, you will need to do an online medical assessment before taking out travel insurance with RACV and pay for any additional premium that may apply. While single non-complicated pregnancies are covered automatically, expectant mothers will be required to disclose all other pregnancies.

However, some conditions and illnesses aren’t covered at all, including those that involve drug or alcohol dependency and those for which you’re currently awaiting surgery, treatment, investigation or procedures. And if your relative or someone whom you’re travelling with has a pre-existing medical condition, that also won’t be covered.

To help you out, Mozo has put together a guide with must-knows for travellers with a pre-existing medical condition.

What medical assistance you will receive

All of RACV’s international travel insurance policies provide 24-hour worldwide emergency assistance and unlimited medical treatment if you get sick or injured overseas. Their policies also give you plenty of time to recover, covering you for up to 12 months from when you first started receiving treatment for the illness or injury.

Under most RACV travel insurance policies, you’re also entitled to:

And if you’re travelling with any dependent children or grandchildren who would be left unsupervised because of your hospitalisation, there’s no need to worry. RACV will ensure they are taken care of, whether that’s organising travel arrangements for them to return to Australia or flying a relative over to come and look after them.

Travelling with dependents

Travelling with family? Your children and grandchildren could be covered for free, as long as they’re:

If you’re travelling with dependents, you can choose between two RACV travel insurance cover types: single and duo/family. Your children and grandchildren will also be covered under RACV’s Ski and Winter Sports insurance option.

Extending your RACV insurance policy

RACV will extend your cover for free if your return to Australia is postponed due to a transport delay or a reason you can claim under your policy.

If you’re looking to extend your insurance policy for any other reason, you will need to contact RACV at least 5 days before your original policy’s expiry date. And the extension, on top of your original policy, cannot exceed a combined period of 12 months.

But for those looking to take multiple trips a year, keep in mind that you won’t be able to extend your cover under RACV’s Annual Multi-Trip policy.

Cancelling your RACV insurance policy

If you decide that the policy you’ve taken out isn’t the right one for you, RACV’s travel insurance comes with a 21 day cooling-off period, provided that you haven’t started your trip yet. In other words, you have 21 days from when the policy is issued to make sure it’s suitable for you and your trip.

Otherwise, you can simply call or email RACV to let them know you want to cancel the policy, and they’ll give you a full refund.

What optional travel insurance cover does RACV travel insurance offer?

Ski and Winter Sports Cover

Planning to hit the slopes over the winter season? If you’re heading to a snowy destination for your next holiday, RACV international policies offer additional coverage for ski and winter sports.

The Ski and Winter Sports add-on comes with unlimited ski overseas medical and hospital cover, as well as some level of cover for equipment hire, ski packs, lift passes, piste closure, and bad weather including avalanches.

Removal of Standard Excess

RACV’s international policies have a default excess of $250, but you can pay an additional premium to reduce or remove that excess.

Specified Luggage and Personal Effects Cover

If you’re looking for an extra bit of protection for valuables, like your camera, laptop or smartphone, you can choose this optional cover for your RACV travel insurance policy. All you’ll need to do is pay an additional premium. But keep in mind there are limits to how much you can claim for each type of item.

A quick guide to the fine print of RACV travel insurance policies

When taking out an RACV travel insurance policy, it’s important to look out for the fine print, so you know exactly what’s included and excluded in your cover. Here are a few tips on what to keep an eye on when picking your policy:

How do I make a claim with RACV travel insurance?

Now that you’re aware of the finer print, making a claim with RACV travel insurance is straightforward! You can either lodge your claim online, by phone or over email. You can do this either during your trip and once you have returned to Australia. Just be sure to submit full details of your claim within 30 days of your return, and include all relevant supporting documentation, so you can receive the full payment for your claim on time and without any hassle.
