Heading to a store and swiping some plastic with the knowledge that your purchase will earn you a little extra something, is certainly a satisfying feeling; and that’s where the Westpac Altitude Platinum comes in. On top of points earning power, the card also comes with a number of perks, including complimentary travel insurance, concierge services and purchase protection for purchases made on the card. However, the card does come with an annual fee starting from $150, or $99 for the first year.

Key features

For the most part, the aim of the game with reward credit cards is earning points, so getting a boost when you first pick up your card can really help. So you’ll be glad to hear that if you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days of having the Westpac Altitude Platinum (Altitude Rewards option) you’ll be eligible for 80,000 bonus Altitude Points (offer terms end 31 March 2021). On the other hand, if you go with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option and spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days, you could earn 60,000 bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer Points (offer terms end 31 March 2020).

For frequent travellers, the Qantas Frequent Flyer version of the card lets you automatically link your credit card with your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, where you can score 0.5 Qantas points per $1 spent on Mastercard, plus bonus points on some Qantas products and services. There is a $200 annual fee to budget for, which includes a $50 Qantas fee.

Alternatively, if you decide to go with the Altitude Rewards option you'll still be able to transfer your points to a number of airline rewards programs, including, Air New Zealand Air Points and Enrich, or you can book through Altitude Travel. This in addition to all the gift cards and retails rewards you can pick up by cashing in your bonus points. With this option, for every $1 spent on Mastercard, you’ll earn 1 Altitude Rewards point.

Earning points isn’t the only advantage to a rewards credit card, of course, there’s also a number of other perks, including insurance for extended warranty, purchase protection on purchases made with the card, and transit accidents. When travelling you can cash in on the complimentary travel insurance once you've spent $500 on prepaid travel costs like airline tickets or accommodation. You'll also be feeling ritzy at home with a dedicated 24/7 concierge service tending to your every whim, from organising concert tickets to making restaurant reservations.

Above and beyond all this talk of rewards and perks, the card does have some more standard features. These include a free additional cardholder so you can earn points faster, the ability to pay through Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Fitbit, a 20.49% p.a. purchase rate and up to 45 interest-free days.

Plus for a limited time, regardless of whether you go with Altitude Rewards or Qantas Frequent Flyer, you'll receive a 0% balance transfer rate for the first 18 months (reverts to 20.49%) with a 1% BT fee. For both options, you'll get a discounted annual fee of $99 for the first year ($150 after that), while for the Qantas option, your Qantas Rewards fee will also be waived for the first year ($50 a year after that). These offers are available to new cardholders who apply before 31 March 2021. Be sure to read the fine print, as other terms and conditions could apply as well.

snapshot
Who is it good for

Regular travellers who can take advantage of both the complimentary travel insurance and the points earning potential could squeeze a lot of value out of this card.

As long as you make sure that you’re earning more value from the points than the cost of the annual fee so your spending is working in your favour, then this card could be for you.

snapshot
Any catches

If you decide to go with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option of the Westpac Altitude Platinum card, be aware that each year you'll incur an additional $50 annual fee as apart of the Qantas Frequent Flyer reward program, bringing the total annual fee to $200 each year.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

Fantastic for balance transfers and QFF points.

This a fantastic product because I was able to transfer the balance of another card and take advantage of the 18 month interest free period offered, and I received a bonus number of Qantas Frequent Flyer points too! I also continue to get QFF points whenever I purchase. I’ve save a considerable amount in interest and gain points at the same time. I am very happy with my bank, Westpac.
