Heading to a store and swiping your plastic with the knowledge that your purchase will earn you a little extra something is certainly a satisfying feeling, and that’s where the Westpac Altitude Platinum comes in. On top of points earning power, the card also comes with a number of perks, including complimentary travel insurance, concierge services and purchase protection for purchases made on the card. However, the card does come with an annual fee starting from $175, but this is only $49 for the first year.
For the most part, the aim of the game with rewards credit cards is to earn points, so getting a boost when you first pick up your card can really help. You’ll be glad to hear that if you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days of having the Westpac Altitude Platinum (Altitude Rewards option) you could receive up to 90,000 bonus Altitude Points. And if you keep your account open for longer than a year while still using the card, you may be eligible for an additional 30,000 bonus Altitude Points (offer terms end 31st July 2024).
On the other hand, if you go with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option and spend at least $4,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days, you could earn 70,000 bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer Points (offer terms end 31st July 2024).
For frequent travellers, the Qantas Frequent Flyer version of the card lets you automatically link your credit card with your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, where you can score 0.5 Qantas points per $1 spent* on Mastercard, plus bonus points on some Qantas products and services. There is a $175 annual fee to budget for plus a $75 Qantas fee, but the annual fee is discounted to $49 in the first year.
Alternatively, if you decide to go with the Altitude Rewards option you'll still be able to transfer your points to a number of airline rewards programs, including, Air New Zealand Air Points and Enrich, or you can book through Altitude Travel. This in addition to all the gift cards and retails rewards you can pick up by cashing in your bonus points. With this option, for every $1 spent on Mastercard, you’ll earn 1 Altitude Rewards point.
Earning points isn’t the only advantage to a rewards credit card, of course, there’s also a number of other perks, including insurance for extended warranty, purchase protection on purchases made with the card, and transit accidents. When travelling you can cash in on the complimentary travel insurance once you've spent $500 on prepaid travel costs like airline tickets or accommodation. You'll also be feeling ritzy at home with a dedicated 24/7 concierge service tending to your every whim, from organising concert tickets to making restaurant reservations.
Above and beyond all this talk of rewards and perks, the card does have some more standard features. These include a free additional cardholder so you can earn points faster, the ability to pay through Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Fitbit, a 19.99% p.a. variable purchase rate and up to 45 interest-free days.
In terms of annual fees, both options have an annual fee of $175, but are discounted to $99 in the first year. These offers are available to new cardholders who apply before 31st July 2024. Be sure to read the fine print, as other terms and conditions could apply as well.
*From 1 January 2022, earn 0.5 Qantas points per $1 up to a maximum of $100,000 spent on eligible purchases annually. Bonus Qantas points not included in the cap.
Regular travellers who can take advantage of both the complimentary travel insurance and the points earning potential could squeeze a lot of value out of this card.
As long as you make sure that you’re earning more value from the points than the cost of the annual fee so your spending is working in your favour, then this card could be for you.
If you decide to go with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option of the Westpac Altitude Platinum card, be aware that each year you'll incur an additional $50 annual fee as a part of the Qantas Frequent Flyer reward program, bringing the total annual fee to $200 each year (bar the first discounted year).

I have been with Westpac for over 35 years and at the start they would look after their customers with advise and information but since the closures of branches their is no more bank managers that know you. As a 20 year old I would walk into the local branch and the manager would say hello and have a conversation. Now we don't have the personal touch its about their profits. Its about charging the maximum on credit cards, not giving a higher interest to savings. Banks don't really care

Terrible and rude customer service. Gave them all the documentation they required for a credit card application which I am more than qualified for in terms of income, no debts great credit score. But their demands were unreasonable including providing a notice of assessment for this years tax return which the ATO has not even requested lodgement for yet. Then after multiple calls and providing other documentation, got some standardised email that my application was rejected. Waste of my time and certainly won’t be banking with them.

Have been a loyal customer for 20 years. Had only started a new job and ended up in hospital. Their terms and conditions for a new credit card is a minimum of 6 months employment, after a few phone calls and being assigned a case officer was granted the card to cover some expenses - now all paid off, now just a back up in case of emergency - customer service goes a long way!
