"When I'm heading abroad, I swear by my Qantas Pay card. It's a debit card that lets you load money instantly, and you can earn Qantas points for every dollar spent overseas. Qantas locks in an exchange rate daily, and I've found it often offers great rates. While it might not be the perfect solution for everyone, I’ve never had issues with it, unlike some other travel cards that can get locked while you’re travelling, which totally defeats the purpose."

Jack - Avoid fees and embrace the train

"Make sure your travel or debit card doesn’t hit you with international ATM fees, or at least offers rebates for them. In many countries, cash is still king, and those ATM fees can add up quickly. Also, when I travelled through Europe, I saved heaps by using a Eurail Pass instead of flying between countries. It’s a more scenic and relaxed way to travel, even if it takes a bit longer. Pro tip: bring your own snacks on the train to avoid the pricey on-board café."

Meredith - Skip the queues at popular attractions

"So I might be a little bit too organised at times, but trust me on this one. If you're visiting popular sites or museums that require tickets, always book a time slot in advance. This way, you can skip the queues and save valuable time. It’s a simple hack that can make your trip much smoother and more enjoyable."

Robyn - Leverage credit card travel insurance

"I travel a fair bit, so this is a no brainer for me. My credit card offers free travel insurance if I pay for my flights with it, and this often works out cheaper even when factoring in the credit card surcharges. It’s a great way to get covered without paying extra for a separate travel insurance policy."

Rachel - Use cash for better budgeting

"While cash might seem outdated, it’s fantastic for sticking to a budget, especially when travelling to multiple destinations with different currencies. By using a debit card with no overseas ATM fees, you can withdraw cash as you need it. This approach helps you avoid merchant fees and ensures you don't end up with a pile of foreign coins you can’t exchange back home."
