Joining the HSBC Rewards Plus Program? Here’s what you need to know…

If you love the movies, travelling or online shopping and want to do it all for free, the HSBC Rewards Plus Program might be right up your alley.

This rewards program allows HSBC credit card customers to collect points for every dollar they spend, which can then be redeemed for rewards. The Program has a large variety of freebies on offer, including travel perks, cashback, tech products and tickets to the theme park, so if you love freebies when you spend, this could be a rewards program for you.

Depending on the HSBC credit card you’re using and whether you’re making a domestic or international purchase, you could be earning up to 2 points for every $1 spent on your rewards card. But keep in mind that points on this rewards program expire after 36 months and there’s also a points cap every month, so you may have to be a bit strategic about how you’re earning and redeeming those points.

Frequently asked questions

Do HSBC rewards points expire?

Yes, all HSBC Rewards Plus points expire 36 months after issue. You’ll receive a reminder in your credit card statement when your points are about to be cancelled.

Are HSBC points capped?

Yes, there is a 10,000 points cap per statement cycle. Combined with the points expiration date, that means you’ll want to be a little bit strategic when it comes to stacking up a pile of points. To stay under the points cap, big spenders might need to spread their spending out a bit. On the other hand, if you’ve got a big points goal in mind, make sure you’re spending enough to reach it before your points start expiring.

What purchases won't earn me rewards points?

While you can earn points on most everyday purchases, you will not earn any points on interest free and other promotions, balance transfers, cash transfers, business expenses, cash advances, fees and charges, disputed transactions, BPAY, and any government fee or charge.

Is there a fee to join the HSBC Rewards Plus Program

No, joining the HSBC Rewards Plus program doesn’t cost any additional fees. But keep in mind that most of the cards do come with annual fees and generally, the higher the points earning power, the higher the fee will be. Make sure that the annual fee isn’t outweighing the value of the points and freebies on offer.

Is there an annual income criteria to apply for a HSBC card?

You must earn a minimum of $40,000 per year to apply for the HSBC Platinum Credit Card.

If you’re keen to get your hands on the HSBC Premier World Mastercard, it gets a bit trickier. To apply, you must have:

  • at least $500,000 in loans OR
  • $200,000 in savings and investments OR
  • a combination of loans, savings and investments totalling at least $500,000 with HSBC
