Launched in 2000, Origin Energy has since expanded its operations in power generation, gas exploration and renewable energy, including solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower technologies.
Origin Energy retails energy services in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. In Australia, Origin provides energy to homes and businesses across several states, such as Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, and ACT.
If you’re looking for an energy plan and live in one of these states, you may be eligible for an Origin Energy plan.
Origin Energy offers a wide selection of energy plans where you can choose individual gas, electricity or dual fuel services. The rates and discounts can vary based on which state you live in and the energy plan you choose. You may be eligible for a number of deals depending on multiple factors, like whether you pay your bills on time or if you sign up for an energy plan online. Some Origin Energy plans even have guaranteed discounts that apply after 12 months.
Depending on which state you live in, you may be able to sign up for a plan with fixed energy rates where you can lock in electricity usage and supply charges for up to two years. Plus, given that there is no exit fee for residential customers, you’ll have the flexibility to change your plan at any time. The terms of energy packages are subject to change, so be sure to check the exact specifications of your plan when you sign up.
You have the option to add sustainable energy to your plan with Origin’s GreenPower and Green Gas options. When you choose GreenPower, Origin will have the percentage of electricity usage that you’ve chosen matched into the electricity grid with electricity from GreenPower accredited renewable resources on your behalf. Origin also offers Australia’s first Green Gas option, which ensures that the greenhouse gas emissions from your natural gas use are offset through their independently audited Carbon Reduction Scheme.
Origin Energy offers a range of payment options, including credit, card, direct debit and BPAY. If you don’t want to pay your bill online or via phone, you can send in a cheque or money order or pay your bill in person at your local post office. If you’re receiving payments from Centrelink, you also have the option to use Centrepay.
You can organise to pay your energy bills via an Easipay payment plan, which allows you to choose between weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments. Origin Energy will work out how much your instalment plans should be by calculating the average of how much energy you have used over a 12 month period.
If you’re digitally savvy, you can register to manage your Origin Energy account wholly online. With an online energy account, you can check your account summary, view and pay your bills whenever you like or set up a direct debit to pay your bills and never miss a payment again. You’ll also be able to track your energy usage over time, see where you use the most energy at home and access personalised energy-saving tips. If you’re a Victorian customer with a smart meter, you’ll have access to Origin’s Energy Manager function, which can predict the amount of your next bill based on your current usage.
If you hold a valid concession card such as a Pensioners Concession Card, you could be eligible for a government rebate and concession on your energy bill. You can apply for a concession via your online Origin Energy account or by completing the online concession card form. Do check the list of rebates available for different states on Origin Energy’s website to see if you can benefit from any of them.
Origin’s Power On Program is available to residential customers who are experiencing temporary or long term financial hardship and can’t manage their energy bills. The program gives eligible customers access to information and bill payment assistance options such as flexible payment plan options, concession and rebate assistance and energy efficiency advice.
Whether you’re planning to switch or move your energy account, Origin Energy has made the process relatively quick and simple. If you’re planning to switch to Origin for your energy needs, you’ll need to fill in an online application form. Should you need any help with the application process, you can call Origin’s customer support which is now available on weeknights and Saturdays.
If you’re an existing Origin Energy customer who is moving houses, you’ll need to notify Origin of your new address, contact details and your intended move-in date online or on the phone. Be sure to choose a connection date at least one day before you move in because your power will be connected anytime between 7am and midnight.

I have solar power. I generate and supply far more than I use. However, I still have a bill to pay to Origin! Why! If you are young and building a new house, get off the grid completely!
We have been customers with Origin for over twenty years. I call them every year and have been offered a very competitive rate each time. We used Origin to install our Solar System on our house. We are waiting for our new apartment to be completed and will use Origin again. Very pleased with the customer service and would recommend them.
I have always been with Origin and have not had any problems, other than rising costs per quarter which is the case with all providers. I do not agree with all the green energy as many farmlands are ruined and the panels, when broken or past use by date, are toxic to the environment. Wind farms are equally bad as as they quickly interfere with with animal and marine life energy fields, stunning marine life and also toxic when broken.
They changed our old electricity meter to a new digital meter. We received our first bill of $400 after that. We never paid our electricity bill this high. We didn't even use the heater just to see how much it would be. I think this new digital meters runs too fast.
They are great because you can save money with my rewards and also save on petrol
