About Travel with Jane

Founded in 2016 by Insured By Us, Travel with Jane set out to provide insurance that’s geared towards women. As mentioned on the Travel with Jane website, 68% of travel insurance policies are taken out by women, but most policy benefits are made with men in mind. Travel with Jane hopes to turn this on its head and provide an affordable, accommodating option for Aussie women.

Cover is available at affordable prices and policy jargon is kept to a minimum to make sure everything is easy to understand. What’s more, a percentage of each policy bought is donated to Women’s Legal Services NSW, a non-profit organisation that does advocacy work for women’s issues and helps disadvantaged women access legal support.

The Travel with Jane blog is also worth a mention, considering it’s a treasure trove of insights and useful advice. Articles cover such topics as travelling alone, safety tips; and travel tips for specific destinations.

Travel with Jane plans

You’ll find four levels of cover to suit your trip and budget: Saver, Basic, Comprehensive and Domestic. Each offers emergency medical cover (save for the Domestic policy), and there are ten optional extras you can add on top to give you the personalised insurance you need.

One major selling point of Travel with Jane policies - and the big thing that sets it apart from other providers - is the gender pay gap discount. Anyone who identifies as a woman will receive a discount of 14.1% on all insurance policies - an amount reflecting the pay gap between men and women in the Australian workforce.

But in keeping with anti-discrimination laws, men will also be able to access the discount, either by contacting the Travel with Jane team or ticking the appropriate box when signing up for a policy.

Frequently asked questions about Travel with Jane

How do I make a claim?

If your holiday doesn’t go according to plan and you wind up needing to make a claim, there are a few things you’ll need to do. In the case of emergency and medical claims, the first thing on your list should be to contact Travel with Jane, and be sure you have medical accounts and receipts at the ready.

If your belongings have been lost or stolen, you should report the incident to local police or the relevant authorities as quickly as possible. You’ll need to provide a written notice and proof of ownership of the items.

Making a claim with Travel with Jane can be done over the phone or online. Just make sure to have your policy number handy, and be ready to provide any relevant documents, such as receipts and credit card statements. Claims are typically processed in five working days, and Travel with Jane will let you know if any further information is required.

Does Travel with Jane cover pre-existing medical conditions?

Travel with Jane automatically covers 42 pre-existing medical conditions, so long as they haven’t resulted in your hospitalisation in the past 24 months. These include glaucoma, migraines, osteoporosis, and diabetes I and II — the kinds of conditions that aren’t recognised as particularly risky by insurers.

If you have a pre-existing condition, be sure to look over the Travel with Jane Product Disclosure Statement to see if it’s included in the list. If it’s excluded, you can still purchase travel insurance - you just won’t be covered for that particular condition.

Will travel with Jane cover me if I’m pregnant while travelling?

If you’re travelling while expecting, you’ll be glad to know that cover is still available to you — up to 26 weeks in the case of a single baby and 19 weeks if you’re having twins or more. Just bear in mind that your cover doesn’t extend to childbirth, care for your newborn child, or getting them back home.

There is an additional option that covers many pregnancy-related complications that the standard policy doesn’t. These include emergency C-sections, medically necessary termination of pregnancy, and premature birth by more than 8 weeks.

Does Travel with Jane offer cruise cover?

Yes, the Cruise Pack is one of ten available extras that travellers can add to their base policy. This covers river, sea and ocean cruises outside of Australian waters that last two or more nights. You’ll be insured in case of emergency onboard medical treatment, cruise delays, missed departures, lost or stolen luggage and more.

Does Travel with Jane cover adventure sports?

If abseiling, deep sea diving, rock climbing or other adventure sports are on the agenda, the Adventure pack is a must. This will cover medical and hospital expenses for accidental injuries caused by the covered activities, as well as loss or damage to sport equipment, whether it’s yours or a rental.

What if I want to cancel my policy?

You’ll be able to get your premium refunded if you decide to cancel your policy within 14 days of receiving your Certificate of Insurance, just as long as your trip hasn’t started and you haven’t made a claim (or intend to make one). You can still cancel your policy once the 14 days have passed, though your premium won’t be refunded.
