Xinja is one of Australia’s newest app-only neobanks, purpose-built for Aussies who love the idea of managing their finances from their smartphones. The Xinja Bank account comes with both Apple Pay and Google Pay integration for users who want to leave their Xinja debit card at home, plus the account has no account fees or overseas ATM and foreign exchange commission fees, making it a convenient and low cost option both at home and abroad.

It impressed our expert judges in the 2020 Mozo Experts Choice Bank Account Awards taking home award wins for Exceptional Everyday Account and Best New Transaction Account.

Key features

Let’s start with fees, because who wants to be paying more than they need to for their bank account? Well if finding a fee-free option is high on your priority list, the Xinja Bank Account might just be your cup of tea.

Xinja don’t charge a monthly account fee and they’ve also made it easy for customers to travel internationally with their Xinja debit card because there are also no overseas ATM fees (the ATM operator might charge one) plus there’s 0% foreign exchange commission when you make purchases over the counter while abroad or on an overseas website.

Just bear in mind that when it comes to withdrawing money from an ATM in Australia, Xinja don’t have ATMs of their own, so it might be worthwhile using an ATM from a major bank (like ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac) which are fee-free.

Xinja also have you covered if you want to leave your wallet at home, as users with eligible smartphones will be able to make purchases with their phones after linking their Xinja debit card to Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Curious about how safe your money is given Xinja are a new bank? Well you’ll be pleased to know that just like every other bank in Australia Xinja are an Authorised Deposit-taking Institution so they’re regulated in the same way as any other bank.

It also means that customers will have the peace of mind knowing that their deposits in a Xinja Bank Account (up to $250,000 per person) are guaranteed under the Federal Government’s Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

Who is it good for

Aside from being a genuinely low-fee option for use in Australia and internationally, the Xinja Bank Account could also be an appealing option for any Aussies wanting to streamline their finances with an app-based bank account.

Any catches

It’s worth remembering that as an app-only bank, the Xinja bank account can only be accessed via a smartphone. That means you won’t be able to walk into a branch if you want to speak to someone, though you will be able to do so with Xinja’s in-app support and chat function.
