Where to stream the 2022 Oscar nominees in Australia? A genuine guide

Cat Streaming Oscar Nominees 2022 at home

For the movie lovers - here's two things to consider. Firstly, the Oscars are coming up in about a month's time. No matter how much belief you put into the concept of award shows, their lists of nominations collect a tonne of the best films from the preceding year.

If you’re sick of browsing the menus of all your streaming services, this year's list of nominations will set you up with easily a month's worth of good choices.

Secondly, finding out what’s actually available to stream in Australia can be a real chore. The majority of websites that explain where and how to watch movies online are usually based in America and can be a little inaccurate. So to save you some hassle ahead of the award night, we’ve compiled a complete list for you.

Let's break it down:

Netflix Australia

Including a few of the best-picture favourites, Netflix Australia has plenty of options for kino excellence. Keep an eye out for heartthrobs DiCaprio and Andrew Garfield.

Netflix also has a couple of animated options for the family: The Mitchells and Robin Robin could prove hits with the younger critics.

  • Don't Look Up
  • The Power of the Dog
  • tick, tick...BOOM!
  • The Mitchells vs. The Machines
  • Lead Me Home
  • Three Songs For Benazir
  • The Hand Of God
  • Robin Robin

Disney+

Over the last two years, Disney made the early call to go all-in on streaming – skipping physical releases entirely for some films. This means that anything owned by Disney can usually be counted on to get on their platforms ASAP. They have a healthy collection of Oscar-nominated features on offer:

  • Encanto
  • Luca
  • Raya And The Last Dragon
  • Cruella
  • Summer Of Soul
  • Free Guy
  • Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Amazon Prime Video

Mr Bezos’ platform has fewer films to offer for its subscribed customers. As is often the case with Amazon prime, much of the content is on the platform - but for an additional fee on top of your prime membership. These two nominees are available with only the subscription price, but a few of the movies listed elsewhere can be got for an additional price.

  • Spencer
  • Coming 2 America

Serena Williams, James Bond and Dune

Assorted other nominees can be seen across YouTube and Google play stores including the Serena Williams biopic - King Richard, and the acclaimed Sci-fi epic Dune. Daniel Craig’s latest Bond film is also available for rental from home for $29.99.

The short film nominees are mostly available on YouTube for free, but can be otherwise tricky to locate.

Unfortunately many of the international films, documentaries and short films are not available for streaming in Australia. While you can watch them with a VPN, they’re otherwise region locked out of Australia.

Cinema Exclusives

Many of the year's top films are naturally coming to us from traditional, big ole’ Hollywood studios. The big studios and film distributors are naturally going to resist putting their biggest titles on streaming - how are they going to make all that money back at the box office otherwise? This means that these best picture-type nominees, and more recent films are still available only in cinemas. If it's on this list - you cannot stream these films in Australia.

  • Belfast
  • Parallel Mothers
  • West Side Story
  • Flee
  • Nightmare Alley
  • Cyrano
  • Drive my Car
  • Licorice Pizza
  • Writing with Fire
  • House of Gucci
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home

But fear not - many of the other best films this year are available from home.
