Designed with beginners in mind, CommSec Pocket offers a simplified approach to share trading that could serve as a good entry point for budding investors. What sets it apart from most other share trading platforms is the decision to offer a curated selection of just seven Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) to invest in. These vary in theme, so you’ll be able to select one or a combination of several that interest you. And you’ll be charged a flat brokerage fee of $2 on trades up to $1,000 and 0.20% on larger amounts.

Key features

Unlike other share trading platforms, which give you access to thousands of Australian-listed stocks and other investment options, CommSec Pocket narrows your choices to seven themed ETFs. These are:

  • Aussie Top 200

  • Aussie Dividends

  • Global 100

  • Emerging Markets

  • Health Wise

  • Sustainability Leaders

  • Tech Savvy

You can set up automatic investments in ETFs of your choice by selecting the amount, start date and frequency (either fortnightly or monthly). An in-app reminder will be sent the day before the scheduled investment, giving you the option to cancel it if you’ve changed your mind.

Importantly, there are no account keeping fees when you trade with CommSec Pocket and brokerage costs have been kept low. You’ll pay just $2 on trades up to $1,000 and 0.20% on larger amounts. That means brokerage comes to $5 on a trade worth $2,500.

Who is it good for

The decision to offer just a handful of investment options might not be appreciated as much by experienced investors (who might prefer the traditional CommSec Share Trading account), but it can help remove some of the uncertainty around share trading for beginners. The low brokerage fees, which compare favourably against most other share trading platforms we track, will also appeal.

Any catches

While there are no account keeping fees, you might encounter fees on other occasions. When you make a trade, for example, cash will be debited from your account two days after the trade is done (this is known as a T+2 settlement). If your account doesn’t have enough funds at this time, a $10 Late Settlement Fee will apply. As always, make sure to read the PDS carefully before signing up.
