Launched in 2004 in Victoria, Red Energy has since expanded its operations to South Australia, New South Wales and south-east Queensland, servicing the energy needs of residential, business and commercial customers. Owned by Snowy Hydro, Red Energy shows its commitment to a clean energy future with a promise that every unit of electricity purchased on selected plans will be matched with one unit of electricity generated from a renewable source.
Red Energy offers electricity, gas and renewable energy options to consumers across Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, NSW and the ACT.
The tariffs and deals that you can receive with Red Energy depend on which state you live in. Red Energy plans generally offer a discount on your bill when you pay on time. With some energy packages, you can also opt for a Fixed Benefit Period, which allows you lock in your rate for two years to safeguard yourself against rising energy rates. It is however important to consider whether a fixed term is right for you because rates can also go down so you could end up paying more than you need to, and if you opt out of your contract before the fixed period ends you could be charged a termination fee.
In Victoria, Red Energy customers with a smart meter installed can get a flexible pricing option which will charge you different rates for peak, shoulder and off peak times.
Red Energy gives its existing customers in NSW the option to upgrade any of their energy products to the 100% accredited GreenPower product. This means that the company will purchase an amount equivalent to 100% of your electricity usage from accredited renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and water and add it to the national electricity grid on your behalf.
When you switch to Red Energy and choose a plan with a two-year Fixed Benefit Period, you’ll receive membership to the Red Energy Rewards program. As a member of this program, you’ll be able to enjoy discounts (over $1500 worth) at restaurants, movie tickets, attractions and even groceries when you present your rewards card at participating outlets. The program is available in Victoria and NSW only.
Red Energy offers a range of convenient payment options including direct debit, credit card and BPAY. If you’re not comfortable paying your bill online or over the phone, you can mail a cheque to Red Energy or make a payment in person at your local post office. If you receive Centrelink payments, you’ll also have the option to use Centrepay.
With Red Energy’s Even Pay option you’ll have the flexibility to pay your energy bill in installments on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. In fact, you can even choose your payment date to match your own pay or salary cycle. Setting up Even Pay is easy and can be done over the phone.
Watch out for the different concessions and rebates available in your state as well as any eligibility requirements you must meet. You may be eligible for a state concession if you hold a Pensioner Concession Card, Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold or Health Care Card.
You’ll be able to freely switch or move your accounts with Red Energy whenever you like. If you’re looking to switch your household to a Red Energy plan, you will need to complete a brief online form. You will be required to give some information including proof of identification (e.g. driver’s license number or passport) as well as the supply address. If you’re not comfortable with filling in your details online, you can also do this over the phone.
If you’re moving houses you can take advantage of Red Energy’s Red2Move, a free online service that allows you to coordinate your entire move from connecting your electricity and water to setting up your pay TV, broadband and home phone. Do make sure you give Red Energy at least three business days’ notice before your expected moving date. You should be aware that other service providers may have additional requirements and connection fees.
