5-star for less: the list of cheapest travel destinations for Aussies revealed
Hotels.com has revealed the top destinations for Aussie travellers who want to experience the champagne lifestyle on a beer budget - and Southeast Asia remains a top contender for cheap luxury getaways.
The website's latest Hotel Price Index revealed a list of 18 cities around the world where Aussie tourists paid $200 or less per night for five-star accommodation last year.
Of those 18 holiday spots, 9 were Southeast Asian destinations, with Siem Reap in Cambodia topping the list for the second year running. Visitors to this city paid an average of just $140 per night for a five-star hotel room.

Travellers heading to Southeast Asian destinations can also expect to pick up a travel insurance policy without breaking the bank, as Mozo’s travel insurance comparison tool shows that comprehensive cover for a week long trip can start as cheap as $42.70.

Domestic getaways and trips to nearby New Zealand also offered Aussie travellers good value for money, with a luxury hotel in Rotorua coming in at just $170 per night.

Travellers hoping to enjoy a little slice of luxury in other holiday hot spots like Greece, Cancun, or Hawaii, however, may be stretching their budgets a little further. These destination were among the most expensive spots to book a five star hotel for the night, with a room in Anaheim, California pricing in at just over 6 times the cost of one in Siem Reap.
