Frequently asked questions about nib

Q1. Who can apply for nib policies?

People under 81 years of age are eligible for a nib travel insurance plan, except if you’re looking to take out Annual Multi-Trip cover, which is only available to those under 76 years of age. You need to be an Australian citizen, or hold a residency visa to apply.
Although you don’t need to be a nib member to apply, you will get a 10% discount if you are.

Q2. When’s the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy?

When you purchase a nib travel insurance policy, cover under the cancellation benefit will begin immediately. This means that if you buy your travel insurance as soon as you start booking in the rest of your trip, you’ll be covered if something goes wrong and you have to cancel.
If you’re interested in the Annual Multi-Trip policy, you must buy it 30 days before the date you want the cover to start.

Q3. Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under nib policies?

There are 35 medical conditions which will be covered automatically and at no extra charge under nib travel insurance policies, including acne, migraine and insulin resistance.
Beyond that, there are a further 9 conditions which are covered, subject to some special criteria. These include conditions like asthma, which is covered as long as you are under 60 years old at the time of purchase and don’t also have lung disease.
There are also some conditions which are specifically excluded from cover, including terminal, mental and sexual illnesses.
Any condition that isn’t listed as any of the above can be covered as long as you apply, undergo a medical assessment and pay an extra premium.

Q4. Can I extend my policy while I am travelling?

You are able to extend a nib travel insurance policy as long as:

If you have to extend for reasons beyond your control, for example if your flights are canceled or delayed, your cover will be automatically extended free of charge.

Q5. What optional additions are there with a nib travel insurance policy?

With a nib travel insurance policy, you’ll have the option to add extra features to tailor your cover to your trip. You can choose to increase cover for valuable items or for rental vehicles, to remove excess by paying an extra premium, or to add cover for snow sports to your policy.

Q6. Is it possible to cancel my nib policy?

Yes! You have 14 days to cancel your policy and get a full refund of your premium. You can also cancel after this cooling off period, but you won’t be entitled to a refund. You also aren’t entitled to a refund if you’ve made a claim on your policy or have already started your trip.
To cancel, just give nib a call.

Exclusions to look out for in nib policies

So what about everything that isn’t covered under your nib travel insurance? You might think that’s less important than what is included, but it’s always a good idea to know what fine print might trip you up and stop your claim from being successful. Here are some of the major exclusions and details you might want to remember:

Customer service was drawn out and terrible as they outsource their travel insurance services to another company. It took 4 phone calls to update my policy and they didn't actually resolve the issue in the end. Don't bother calling the help line because no one there actually knows what's going on. Ended up cancelling and 2 weeks later they still haven't refunded me the money! I can't imagine what it would be like trying to claim.
