What’s included, excluded and other conditions you should know about

Pre-existing medical conditions

Travel Insurance Direct automatically covers over 40 pre-existing medical conditions like asthma, epilepsy, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Fine print:  You must satisfy all the criteria associated with your particular condition in order to qualify for cover, so be sure to read the policy information thoroughly so you know you're covered. If you have a pre-existing medical condition that isn’t categorised under “automatic cover”, Travel Insurance Direct won’t cover it.

Pregnancy

Travelling while pregnant comes with certain risks and can be tricky at times, so there are different conditions for mums-to-be when they take out travel insurance. Travel Insurance Direct covers a single pregnancy up to 26 weeks, that is, as long as there have been no previous complications or issues.

Fine print: For a multiple pregnancy (like twins), women are only covered up to 19 weeks. Also keep in mind, early childbirth, care of a newborn, fertility treatment and ante-natal care aren’t covered.

Snow sports and activities
If you’re heading to the slopes on your next overseas getaway, you’ll need to add Snow Sports cover to your Travel Insurance Direct policy to be covered for snow activities. Additional ski and snowboard insurance will cover you for things like snow sports and leisure, equipment, piste closure and any prepaid costs you lose due to closure, like a lift pass.

Fine print: Prefer extreme snow sports? The bad news is activities like luging, racing, ski acrobatics and ice hockey aren’t covered by Travel Insurance Direct.

Cruise
There is no extra cost for cruise cover when you take out any overseas travel insurance policy with Travel Insurance Direct. You’ll automatically have cover for any medical expenses on board and be reimbursed for any prepaid excursions or costs you miss out on due to sickness or injury.

Fine print: If you’re keeping it close to home and taking a cruise in Australian waters, cruise insurance isn’t covered under the Domestic policy offered by Travel Insurance Direct. In this case, you’ll have to take out one of the three overseas policies in order to be covered.

Families
Who doesn’t love a family holiday? With Travel Insurance Direct you can bundle your cover so that your entire family is under the same policy. You’ll all be covered for things like car rental, unexpected cancellation and medical costs.

Fine print: You can only have a total of 2 adults and 6 dependants on the same policy. A “dependant” refers to your kids or grandkids that are under 21 and not employed full time.

Important information for ensuring a successful Travel Insurance Direct insurance claim

Ready to tick travel insurance off your pre-holiday checklist? Before you do, take the time to familiarise yourself with the claims process of your policy. Doing this before you go means you won’t be caught out with missing documents or receipts that you may need to make a claim down the track. Here are some simple steps to ensure success when making a travel insurance claim:

How to make a claim with Travel Insurance Direct

The quickest and easiest way to make a claim is via the Travel Insurance Direct website. Follow these steps to ensure you do everything you need to do, so you can get an outcome on your claim as soon as possible:

1. Once you’ve logged in to the Travel Insurance Direct website with your email address and password, select ‘make a claim’ which is located under the Claims tab.

2. Answer the first round of questions with all the details you need to so that Travel Insurance Direct can determine what sort of claim you are making.

3. After you’ve answered the first set of questions, you’ll need to describe the events that took place associated with your claim. Provide as much detail as you can about the relevant event so that the assessors of your claim have all the information they need to determine the outcome.

4. You’ll then be asked a few more questions about your claim and will be advised about the documentation you’ll be required to provide to make a claim. Travel Insurance Direct will also ask you to list which expenses you are claiming.

5. Once you have completed the first four steps, you’ll receive an email with a list of documents you’ll need to provide and any relevant instructions for your particular claim.

6. Upload your documents onto your claim through the Travel Insurance direct website by clicking the ‘select file’ button. In the case that you don’t have a particular required document, you will be asked to provide a detailed reason why.

7. After all the documents have been uploaded, you’ll be given the opportunity to review you claim and then submit! Travel Insurance Direct will notify you once an outcome has been determined.

Fortunately I've never had to make a claim. It was easy to apply online and their follow up emails were instant. I have always paid way in advance of our departure date and when the time came for our trip, they sent us a lovely text with our policy number and wished us a safe trip. I've used Travel Insurance Direct a number of times now. Each time we use them we get a discount.
