5 sustainable ways to give this Christmas

Christmas cookies

The idea of sustainability and being eco-friendly has been a popular concept that has taken off over the last few years and for very good reason. Aside from the aspect of saving by reusing and recycling, the idea of creating something that is sustainable can have a positive impact on many facets of life including the environment and the impact we have on our precious planet, as well as having a positive effect on the back pocket.

But if you’re not exactly a green thumb by nature, we’ve put together a few simple tips on a more sustainable approach to Christmas gift giving this year, and you might just be surprised at how easy and rewarding making eco-friendly pressies can be.

  1. Get baking
Everybody loves a sweet treat this time of year, and what better way to celebrate the festive season than to bake your own goods to gift loved ones? A great option for getting the kids involved, you could experiment with cookies, rocky road and fudge, purchase some recyclable packaging, add a ribbon and Bob’s your Uncle. Baked goods also make a great ‘Thank you’ gift for teachers and colleagues alike.
  2. Savoury treats
If baking isn’t your forte, but you’re still keen to spoil the special people in your lives with something yummy, why not delve into the world of savoury spreads and condiments? You could make your own spice blends, add them to cute, reusable glass jars with handmade tags, or perhaps try your hand at some home made jam and chutneys with personalised stickers, which are sure to impress.
  3. Travel cups
Even though you cannot make these yourself, purchasing a keep cup for a Christmas gift promotes the idea of sustainability through reuse. We all know a coffee, or even tea addict, who could benefit by the use of a cute travel cup when on the move. There are so many to choose from these days; insulated, glass, patterned, metallic and so much more, making it a simple way to say Merry Christmas.
  4. Reusable cutlery
With this year’s ban on plastics, it’s not hard to see why gifting reusable cutlery would be a great present. The same goes for reusable straws, food storage containers and carry bags. Whether it be for a child for their school lunch, an office worker or a mum on the go, gifting reusable cutlery means there is less wastage in the world and more savings when it comes to purchasing food on impulse.
  5. Experiences
What better joy in life is there than to experience something unlike ever before. Why not spoil family and friends with an ‘experience’ gift this Christmas? From things like sky-diving to farm stays, cooking classes and crafts, they’ll create everlasting memories without the need for tangible gifts that end up in landfill in a few months.
