Mozo Review   Qantas Money Qantas Premier Platinum Review

Last updated: 31 May 2019.

What's hot:
  • Up to 2 points per $1 on Qantas spends

  • Up to 120,000 bonus points until 31 October 2019 (spend criteria applies)

  • Mozo Experts Choice Award winner 2018

What's not:
  • $299 annual fee after the first year

Mozo snapshot:

The very first credit card from Qantas Money, this plastic is aimed at frequent flyers, with plenty of rewards value including up to 2 points per $1 spent with Qantas and heaps of travel benefits like airport lounge passes, discounted flights and travel insurance. In fact, it's great reward value was part of the reason the Qantas Premier Platinum Credit Card took out a 2018 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Best Qantas Frequent Flyer Premium Credit Card. There’s also the opportunity to snag up to 120,000 bonus points - 20,000 points for each month you spend $1,500 in the first six months. But all this does come at a price, and the hefty annual fee and interest rate are something to keep in mind.

Key features:

The Premier Platinum Credit Card is the first credit card offering from Qantas Money, and packs solid rewards earning power for frequent travellers - especially those who love to fly and shop Qantas.

The card comes with some pretty typical features for a rewards card, including a 19.99% purchase rate, 21.99% cash advance rate and a $199 annual fee in the first year ($299 after).

But this is Qantas’ own credit card, and where it really performs is points earning for Frequent Flyer members and spenders who travel often. Points are automatically credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account which means you’ll have to either already be a member, or sign up to get the card (sign up is free for cardholders).

Here’s how points earning breaks down:

  •  - 1 point per $1 on spending in Australia, up to $10,000 each month (0.5 points per $1 after)

  •  - 1.5 points per $1 on international spending (don’t forget about the 3% foreign exchange margin!)

  •  - 1 extra point per $1 on eligible Qantas spends, including Qantas flights

When you sign up before 31 October 2019 you can also snag up to 120,000 bonus Qantas points. How do you get your hands on these points? For the first six months after being approved for your new card, you can score 20,000 points each month you spend $1,500 or more. For big spenders, this is a great chance to plump up your points stash!

There are also a bunch of great benefits on offer for jetsetting spenders, including complimentary travel insurance, two free airport lounge invitations each year, a concierge service to help you snag things like event tickets and restaurant reservations and a $50 Qantas Wine voucher (minimum $150 spend). Plus, when you book Qantas flights through the concierge with your Premier Mastercard, once a year you can cash in on discounts of up to 20% for you and up to 8 people travelling with you.

If you want to clear some lingering credit card debt when picking up a Premier Mastercard from Qantas, you can do so with the 0% balance transfer offer, which lasts for 18 months. Just make sure you have a plan in place to clear your debt in that time, since afterwards, any leftover balance will be charged interest at 21.99%.

Who it's good for:

Unsurprisingly, Qantas’ first foray into credit cards is best suited to spenders who travel often and love to shop Qantas.

The annual fee and interest rate are reasonably hefty, so it’s great for big spenders who’ll get enough value from the travel freebies on offer to justify the cost, and pay off their balance in full and on time.

Any catches?

Don't forget that when you use your points for a Classic Flight Reward with Qantas, taxes, fees and carrier charges also apply. For example, at the time of writing, a return Economy Classic Flight Reward from Sydney to London is 120,000 Qantas Points plus $724 in taxes, fees and carrier charges. Keep in mind this extra cost might change depending on when and what you book. Plus, if you choose to redeem your rewards points for a flight, remember you won't earn Status Credit or Qantas points on that flight. So check the fine print before cashing in your points!

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.
