Victorian households set to see a change on their energy bills

If you’re an energy customer living in Victoria who’s recently received your most recent energy bill, you may have noticed something a little different this time around.

Thanks to the July 1 regulation changes, energy retailers are now obligated to display a ‘best offer’ alert on a customer’s bill.

The alerts were introduced to inform households who could be paying more than they need to on their energy bills.

Retailers are expected to do this four times a year for electricity deals and three times a year for gas plans.

“It’s all about rebuilding trust in a market which multiple inquiries and reviews in recent years have concluded is not operating in the best interests of consumers," said Essential Services Commission Chairperson, Kate Symons.

Other regulation changes that were created to work in favour of consumers was the Victorian Default Offer (VDO), which saw close to 200,000 Victorian households and small businesses rolled onto better value energy deals.

But according to Mozo energy expert, Nathan Warne, Victorian households should still look beyond their retailer’s suggestions.

“It’s great to see retailers stepping up to ensure their customers are on the best deal for their home, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider other options,” he said.

“Do your research by shopping around on other offers, you might find that a better deal exists elsewhere - or if you’re not ready to move on from your current retailer, find out if they’d be willing to price match.”
