When’s the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy?

While you can even purchase an American Express Travel Insurance policy on the day that your travel begins, before the actual commencement of your journey, it’s a good idea to buy it as soon as you book your tickets so that you will have cover for possible changes or cancellations to your travel plans.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under American Express Travel Insurance?

American Express Travel Insurance provides coverage for lots of pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and hypertension. However, if you do have a pre-existing condition read the policy document carefully to understand any specific exclusions or other terms and conditions that could be related to your illness or condition.

Can I extend my American Express Travel Insurance policy while I am travelling?

You’ll need to contact American Express Travel Insurance before the end date of your policy to discuss if you can extend the period of coverage.

Is it possible to cancel my American Express Travel Insurance policy?

You’ll have a cooling off period of 14 days from the date that your insurance was confirmed, electronically or in writing. During this time, you can cancel your policy by informing American Express in writing or over the phone. If you cancel your policy within these 14 days, your premium would be refunded. However, cooling-off rights do not apply if you have already started your journey or if you have made a claim during this period.

We have American Express Platinum travel insurance with Chubb, which we have had for many years. We have never had to use it until this year when one of our children sustained a very extensive leg fracture overseas requiring emergency treatment at home. We had quite a substantial claim and this was after many companies refunded accomodation etc. We worked extensively for 3 months from get refunds from Qantas (who made our life very difficult even though we are high tier members and we will never fly again with them) Chubb has a very convoluted way of getting around refunds vs forfeits with regards to flights, and your claim will be impacted. Ultimately we are out of pocket $4500. Don't try too hard to get refunds like we did and spent months and probably 20 hours of time on the phone chasing. Do the basics as spending many hours doing this will not benefit your claim (or time). You have no direct contact with the person doing your claim, (even though I have an email informing me that I would be assigned a case support) it is very impersonal and it takes a long time for them to respond to you.
