Frequently asked questions about American Express Travel Insurance

Q1. Who can apply for American Express Travel Insurance?

You can buy American Express Travel Insurance if you’re an Australian resident, are at least 18 years old at the time of application and are not over the maximum age limit applicable for a plan (see next question). Individuals, couples, groups as well as families can apply for travel insurance with American Express.

Q2. What is the age limit for the different levels of insurance?

The age limit for a single trip international American Express insurance policy is 89 years for comprehensive cover, 79 years for essential and 30 years for the basic policy.

Q3. When’s the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy?

While you can even purchase an American Express Travel Insurance policy on the day that your travel begins, before the actual commencement of your journey, it’s a good idea to buy it as soon as you book your tickets so that you will have cover for possible changes or cancellations to your travel plans. If you’re going with the AMEX single trip insurance cover, you can buy the policy up to 9 months before the trip begins. In case of the annual trip insurance, you can choose to activate the cover up to 45 days before your first journey begins.

Q4. Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under American Express Travel Insurance?

American Express Travel Insurance provides cover for 53 pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and hypertension. However, if you do have a pre-existing condition read the policy document carefully to understand any specific exclusions or other terms and conditions that could be related to your illness or condition. For instance, you will not be covered if you are taking blood thinning medication or if you have been hospitalised for a specific condition during the 24 months prior to the issue date of your policy. It’s always advisable to be honest and upfront about any medical conditions before you buy the insurance policy so you’re fully aware of what you’re covered for.

Q4. Can I extend my American Express Travel Insurance policy while I am travelling?

You’ll need to contact American Express Travel Insurance before the end date of your policy to discuss if you can extend the period of cover.

Q5. Is it possible to cancel my American Express Travel Insurance policy?

You’ll have a cooling off period of 14 days from the date that your insurance was confirmed, electronically or in writing. During this time, you can cancel your policy by informing American Express in writing or over the phone. If you cancel your policy within these 14 days, your premium would be refunded. However, cooling off rights do not apply if you have already started your journey or if you have made a claim during this period.

This is the best and most comprehensive insurance for me at a fraction of the cost! I used to buy travel insurance for every trip overseas - between $400-600 added to the cost of every trip for my employer. Then I discovered AMEX Annual Comprehensive travel cover and suddenly for a little under $400 per year I have better cover for every trip, no matter how many times I travel in the year! Easy online signup and automatic renewals. I've been a customer for three years now and very happy. My policy covers me for all the places I need to travel (USA & Canada, UK & Europe, Asia etc). Best insurance decision I ever made.
