What's hot:

  • 2017 Mozo Experts Choice Award

  • 0% balance transfer rate for 18 months

  • Earn 1.25 points per $1 spent (with the Rewards card) or 0.5 points per $1 spent (with the Qantas card)

  • Complimentary perks like travel insurance and concierge

What's not:

  • High 21.99% cash advance rate

Mozo snapshot:

The Suncorp Clear Options Platinum credit card provides the flexibility of choice when it comes to rewards. You’ll be able to choose one of two cards, either earning Suncorp Rewards points through the (Rewards) card, or Qantas Frequent Flyer Points through the (Qantas) card. Add in a range of complimentary insurance features and an 18 month 0% balance transfer rate and this could be the card for you. Even better, the Clear Option Platinum balance transfer deal was recognised as one of the best on the market - taking out a 2017 Mozo Experts Choice Award for Premium Balance Transfer  Credit Card.

Key features:

Sign up for a Suncorp Clear Options Platinum credit card and you’ll be able to choose from one of two rewards cards. With the Clear Options Platinum (Rewards) card you’ll earn 1.25 points for every $1 spent which can be redeemed via the Suncorp Bank Rewards program for rewards such as flights through the Velocity, Emirates Skywards or Krisflyer programs. Alternatively, upgrade to the Clear Options Platinum (Qantas) card for an additional $49 a year and you’ll be able to earn Qantas Points at a rate of 0.5 points for every $1 spent.

You can also snag triple rewards points on eligible purchases for the first six months after being approved for the card.

On top of the rewards schemes you’ll also be eligible for a number of complimentary insurance offers including international travel insurance, extended warranty and purchase protection, as well as the 24/7 concierge service.

The Suncorp Clear Options Platinum credit card comes with a $129 annual fee ($178 with the Qantas card) as well as a high 20.74% purchase rate and a $10 late payment fee, so you’ll want to pay off your balance in full. If you do pay off your balance in full each month you’ll be able to take advantage of the 55 interest free days.

Who it's good for:

The Suncorp Clear Options Platinum credit card is a great alternative for jetsetters looking for a choice in their rewards program while having access to a comprehensive range of insurance privileges to safeguard their travel and spending.

With its 0% balance transfer offer for the first 18 months, it’s also an attractive option for anyone with an existing card balance wanting to manage their debt. Just make sure you clear that debt during the introductory period, because the balance transfer rate reverts to the high 21.99% cash advance rate afterwards.

Any catches?

With a high purchase rate of 20.74% you’ll want to be sure to pay off your balance in full each month, especially with the $10 late payment fee.

Needs to be better

The credit cards online banking needs work. It does not keep a running tally on its online banking which is confusing and irritating. Also my husband and I have a joint credit card and we can't see each others pending purchases.

Can't wait to cut it up.

I inherited this card from a Citibank enquiry. I didn't use it for years but needed to help a friend out with $25k which is still on my card. Cost is 2% per month which is way too expensive.

Revealing rewards

How do we do it?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,
  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,
  • work out what that's actually worth to you,
  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.
  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.
  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.
  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.
  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.
  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.
  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.
  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.
