Frequently asked questions about RACT car insurance

What excess option should I opt for?

That depends on your budget and how you want to manage your insurance. You may want to pay a lower premium now in return for higher excess at the time of an accident, or you may be happy to pay a bit more upfront so you don’t have to come up with the cash when you really need it most.

Another thing to remember is that young drivers will pay an extra excess.

How is my premium calculated?

Your premium will depend on a bunch of different things that all combine to give RACT an idea of how likely it is you will make a claim. These things include:

  • the make, model and colour of your car
  • where you keep your car when you aren’t driving it
  • who you are - your age and how long you’ve been driving

How can I pay my premium?

You can choose to pay your premium annually in one lump sum, or you can pay in monthly installments. Keep in mind, paying monthly will incur extra charges.

What discounts are available?

Love a discount? When you take out car insurance with RACT, there are a bunch of discounts you can cash in on, including:
No claims discount

Multi-policy discount

Silver driver discount (for people over 50, working less than 20 hours a week)

What is covered by my policy?

Your RACT insurance policy will cover heaps of unexpected costs that might come with having an accident in your car. Covers include:

  • Roadside assistance
  • A new car if yours is written off
  • Emergency repairs without assessment
  • Towing costs
  • Emergency accommodation and transport
  • A hire car after having yours stolen
  • Hire car liability

Remember, conditions apply to these benefits.

What optional extras can I add to my car insurance?

Other cover options you may want to add to your policy for extra security include the cost of a rental car after you have an accident and cover for any modifications to your vehicle.

Knock for knock policy in play?

They appear to have a knock for knock policy whereby they don't follow up claims with any vigour if it involves their partners (in my case Cruising' Motor Homes). As such you will pay excess regardless of other party admitting guilt (which is what is happening in my case).

Get covered fully get comprehensive car insurance

I got full comprehensive car insurance which is the best policy because it covers my car fully in case of an accident even if it is my fault and for fire or theft; etc.

Could not be happier with this Tassie company

I found this company after the company I was with for over fifteen years rang to say they were doubling my rates and no added benefits to soften the blow. Well I was not impressed. I rang around and I talked to friends and looked at all the offers and I came to the conclusion that RACT gave the best deal and valued my custom.
