Frequently asked questions about Shannons car insurance

What does a Shannons car insurance policy cover?

If you love your car and invest a lot of time, money and energy into it, then you’ll want it to be protected from accidents, right? A Shannons comprehensive car insurance policy covers a bunch of things, including:

  • A new car if yours is written off
  • Cover for your personal property if your car is stolen
  • One excess-free windshield repair
  • Emergency repairs
  • Reasonable towing and accommodation in an emergency
  • A rental car if yours is stolen

Remember, conditions apply to many of these benefits, so it's worth checking your PDS carefully to know exactly what you’re covered for.

Will my Shannons policy cover modifications to my vehicle?

Been tinkering with your car? If you’ve made modifications to your vehicle, these can be covered under a Shannons policy, but it's important to list them when you apply.

Modifications are only covered if put down in writing, and may change your premium (usually, they’ll make it more expensive.)

Are there any discounts on offer?

Absolutely! If you’re looking to save some money when buying a Shannons car insurance policy, then make sure you keep an eye out for these discounts:

  • No claim discount
  • Multi-vehicle discount
  • Bundling discount on home and contents insurance

Can I choose my excess?

The short answer is no. Unlike many car insurance options, when you buy a policy with Shannons, they will set your excess depending on your policy quote.

How can I pay my premium?

There’s a little bit of wiggle room with how you pay your Shannons premium. You can opt to either pay it all in one go as a lump annual sum, or you can opt for paying in monthly instalments, at no extra cost.

How is my premium calculated?

There are a number of different factors that go into working out your Shannons car insurance premium, including:

  • Set costs. This includes things like Shannons cost of distribution and are generally the same for all drivers.
  • Fees and charges. This could include stamp duty, GST and any other applicable government charges.
  • Your risk profile. The riskier you are as a driver, the more you’ll pay to be insured. Shannons works out how risky you are using details about you and your driving, such as what kind of car you drive, where you keep it and how long you’ve been driving.

How is Shannons rated by customers?

Wondering what Shannons customers think of their car insurance policies? Well, now you can find out. Read all about what it’s like to be insured by Shannons, from the customer service, to getting value for your dollar, by heading over to our customer review section.

How to make a claim

  • Your Shannons policy number

Auto renew-won’t pay back if you forget to cancel

July 2021: I had Shannon’s insurance on a few cars and most recently had it on my 69 Valiant and a 2007 CBR1100 motorbike. I sold the bike in Feb 2019 and the car October 2020. Of course Shannon’s insurance AUTO-RENEWS, which means you keep paying until to tell them (either in writing or call a service desk) that you want to cancel. Unfortunately for me the only time I remembered to cancel was when I couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night. My job is ridiculously hectic as I’m in meetings all day during business hours and I just kept forgetting until it was outside of business hours. As it turns out, after they dicked me around for a week or so, they won’t backdate the refund of insurance to when I sold the motorbike. I provided them with documented proof from the NSW RTA as to date of sale etc.

Don't actually offer the policies they advertise.

They advertise agreed value but they won't agree, only demand their own limits.
