As bushfires hit QLD, home safety checks are top of mind
We’re unfortunately seeing the extreme danger of Aussie bushfires again.
Surviving conditions like the ones just seen in Queensland can be very difficult. Fires move quickly and sometimes there are few answers. But good preparation can at least provide some peace of mind. If you’re someone who resides in a listed fire zone, it’s always worth reviewing your bushfire plan. It might just make the difference - or at least keep you safe.
Here are a few home checks that might help.
- Prep your house
- Seal gaps & open areas around the house.
- Check water systems to help you during crisis.
- Check your smoke alarm.
- Clear out almost anything that might catch a spark.

* leaves, mulch, twigs, debris, etc.
- Keep a check on Emergency warnings in your area. Check your state’s emergency services. If you’re in Queensland, download SES Assistance QLD. NSW has a HazardWatch for residents to check for warnings. Call Triple Zero (000) if you’re in an emergency situation.
- Contact the police. If you must leave your house, inform the police and they can keep an eye on your property. You can also report to them a lit cigarette tosser or bushfire arson.
- Know where to go. Have a list of places that you can go to in case of an emergency. Don’t forget to notify the police & your family/friends about your temporary address.
