If you’re after flexible home and contents insurance cover with a range of generous features, then the Youi Home & Contents Insurance policy is definitely one to consider. The policy will cover you for everything from a range of major natural disasters, to theft and burglary.

Key features

Youi Home and Contents Insurance will provide cover not only for a variety of events like storms, fire and theft but also for a less likely natural disaster such as an earthquake. The policy even includes cover for any loss or damage caused by flooding, just as long as it’s not due to oceanic activity, rising damp or seepage of water from the ground.

What’s included under the building part of your policy:

This policy insures  the structure of your home against disaster, but keep in mind, landscaping and building materials kept at your home (for example, all those expensive tiles you bought for a bathroom reno) aren’t covered. If your house is damaged due to one of these events, your policy also includes cover for the cost of emergency repairs and clean up fees (up to 20% of the sum insured).

If you’re unable to live in your house following damage to your home, the policy will also cover the costs for your temporary accommodation for up to 12 months (up to 12% of the sum insured) and up to $2,500 for pet accommodation.

What’s included under the contents part of your policy:

When it comes to everything in your house, Youi Home and Contents Insurance covers things like carpets, antiques and other valuable, cameras and personal medical equipment automatically. You can also opt to include cover for things like jewellery and work tools, thought remember it will bump your premium up.

If you work from home, it's important to note that home office equipment and any stock you’re storing at your home aren’t covered by this policy.

On top of all this, if you feel like there's something you want to protect that's not already included, then Youi allows you to tailor your policy to what you really need, with a range of optional extras including accidental loss and damage, business items and vet costs for the furry residents of the household.

While Youi Home and Contents insurance allows you to choose your excess level to help reduce your premium, keep in mind that if you want to pay your premium in monthly instalments, it will cost you extra. There is also no underinsurance cover with this policy, so make sure you value your home and everything in it correctly, or it’ll be money out of your pocket to cover the rest of the costs.

Value for money and excellent service.

This insurer really checks how you use your property, any little differences, etc. We are rural and have things on the property that cost a lot more for coverage with other insurers. We are getting much better value for money and the customer service is excellent, regardless if its a quote, sale, query or claim. We have 3 other policies with Youi and all give us good value and the flexibility we want. The only slight negative would be that the basic excess can be a bit high and lowering it costs a bit.

They are cheaper but good luck getting paid out.

Do not waste a cent insuring through Youi. They will take your money and not pay out. Their reasons are ridiculous. We had a storm that dropped over 450 mls of water. A lot of houses in our suburb were damaged. Youi being the only one that I know of not to pay up. 7 friends all had their insurance approved through other companies. Their excuse is that our house should have held up in that storm. It’s brick and rendered. I take pride in it. We even had pondcrete painted around the drains. Water seeped through the wall and apparently that’s not covered. So trust me spend your hard earned money somewhere else. We also had a car accident claim that they failed to process properly and we were then issued with letters from debt collectors 12 weeks after paying our excess. Their response was that they hadn’t gotten around to finalising the claim. The staff are incompetent.

    Wow! Way off the mark!

I did a home and contents quote via the website and then got the call afterwards to complete. The guy was chatty and nice enough, but their quote come in at $560 per month. I'm paying $180 pm with AAMI and that's after it went up 15%. I was questioned if what I am paying is correct and they couldnt be that far out. Says it maybe because there are tall trees within 20m of my home and when I said it was on other people's property I was told it was a risk. This is the second time I have tried Youi, first time on my car and they were two and a half times more expensive. Seems to me they only want to insure people with as little risk as possible, I get it, but they are in the risk business!
