Smart Awards Credit Card (Qantas Points) | Qantas Frequent Flyer |
Please note, this credit card's interest free period will decrease to 44 days, effective 1 May 2024.
Love rewards points? You might want to check out the CommBank Smart Awards Credit Card. This card offers travel perks like lounge access, included travel insurance, and no foreign exchange fees. You can also choose to earn either CommBank Awards Points or Qantas Points as you spend. This card is also the winner of two 2023 Mozo Experts Choice Award for best Premium Rewards Credit Card and best Cashback Premium Credit Card.
CommBank’s newest credit card could be one to watch if you’re a fan of earning rewards while you spend.
You can earn rewards points while you spend, either with CommBank’s Awards Points or by opting in to earn Qantas Points (note that there is a $60 opt-in fee for Qantas points, and a $99 fee to sign up if you are not already a member). With this card, you could earn:
1.5 Awards Points/0.6 Qantas Points per $1 spent up to and including $5,000 per statement period on purchases at select major Australian supermarkets, department stores, dining outlets, petrol stations, and utilities (terms and conditions apply).
1 Awards Point/0.4 Qantas Points per $1 spent up to and including $5,000 per statement period on all other eligible purchases.
0.5 Awards Points/0.2 Qantas Points per $1 spent above $5,000 per statement period on all remaining eligible purchases.
Points boost: 2 Awards Points/0.8 Qantas Points per $1 spent on the highest single eligible purchase per statement period (terms and conditions apply).
Awards Points can be used through the CommBank Awards site on things like gift cards, electronics, appliances, and cashback, as well as redeemed exclusively through Myer and Flight Centre.
The Smart Awards credit card could also come in handy for travel. There are no fees for foreign transactions, which could make this card an attractive option. The Smart Awards card also includes travel insurance (activate prior to travelling, terms and conditions apply) and Mastercard Travel Pass provided by Dragonpass, giving you access to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide.
This credit card has a 20.99% p.a. purchase rate attached, so you’ll definitely want to pay off your balance in full each statement period. There is a $19 monthly fee, but this will be waived when you spend $2,000 in the statement period.
There are currently two awards points options for new customers – one for those who want CommBank Awards Points, and another who opt for the Qantas points:
CommBank Awards offer (T&Cs apply)
Receive up to 75,000 Awards Points – 25,000 per month – when you apply for a new Smart Awards credit card and spend $1,500 each month on eligible purchases for the first 3 months from activation. Up to 90,000 Points – 30,000 per month – for CommBank Yello tier applicants.
With its travel-orientated benefits, this card could be a rewarding option for frequent flyers who don’t want to be tied to a specific airline’s points program.
If you aren’t a big spender, you might have trouble with the $2,000 a month spend required to waive the $19 monthly fee. If you’re interested in earning Qantas Points with this card, you’ll also have to keep in mind the $60 annual opt-in fee.

This credit card has a high Interest rate and the points rewards are not really worth the interest. If you paid it off before interest period each time you might get something of value but for a card to pay off existing debt don't use this one. I had a fraudulent activity on my card which the bank did refund only for it too happen again from the same criminals a few months later despite having restricted the card from international transactions.

Commbank excels with its user-friendly app and decent ATM/branch network. The Smart Awards credit card can be included at no extra cost if you have a home loan with Wealth Package added. Its best feature by far is the complimentary included travel insurance – it's through Covermore and the cover seems reasonably comprehensive. However, despite not paying the annual fee, I still find this card underwhelming overall. I am a reward points aficionado and the Commbank Awards program just doesn't cut it. The card has a low points earning rate and transfer rate to Qantas Frequent Flyer.
