New findings by Paypal have found that Aussies of all ages are embracing online shopping. According to Paypal, 97% of Aussies between 18-75 now shop online, making an average of a whopping 3 purchases per week!

Aussies are also keen to embrace new ways to shop, including partaking in virtual online shopping in the metaverse and letting their smart appliances help them with their shopping needs.

The metaverse becomes a new digital shopping reality

The metaverse has become a popular phenomenon among tech-heads over recent years, and now it’s become an online shopping destination.

Paypal has found that almost a quarter (23%) of Australians would be interested in shopping in the metaverse and over half (51%) of Aussies already using the metaverse have used it for shopping.

While online gaming is the most popular reason that people are using the metaverse, statistics suggest that online shopping in the metaverse will continue to grow in popularity.

Shopping via smart appliances is gaining popularity

Aussies are taking the experience of online shopping one step further, with 51% saying that they are comfortable with letting their smart appliances (such as fridges and cars) plan their purchases and make payments for them.

A third of surveyed Australians agree that they would like it if their car could connect with nearby petrol stations to find the best price. Meanwhile, one-in-ten say that they would like their fridge to be able to show them relevant grocery ads, deals and discounts.

So, what does this mean for the future?

Current trends seem to suggest that Aussies will continue online shopping at a great rate and will further adopt new smart ways of shopping as they become more readily available.

14% of Aussies admit to having bought something via their game console and one-in-seven have used their smart TV or home device to make a purchase. This number is only set to increase as appliances such as fridges and cars become equipped with the necessary technology to help people shop.

At this rate, it may be sooner than we think that our refrigerators are so smart that they start automatically buying the food that we are running out of!
