Harry Potter fans! Something big hit the gaming world this February ... Hogwarts Legacy.

Aside from an array of mobile games, Hogwarts Legacy is the first game in the Harry Potter universe to launch since ‘Book of Potions’, which came out on PlayStation 3 in 2013.

My younger self (who spent way too many hours playing the ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ PlayStation 2 game) is screaming right now.

Side note: Can we bring back the whole noughties trend where every big movie release came with a video game adaptation? ‘102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue’ (PS1), ‘Madagascar’ (PS2) – need I say more?

What is Hogwarts Legacy?

Here’s a rundown on what you need to know about the new Hogwarts Legacy game:

Set in the 1800s, Hogwarts Legacy is a fully immersive open-world game that lets players deep dive into the world of wizarding pre-Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts.

With out-of-this-world graphics, this action role-play game lets players create and customise their own hyper-realistic wizard character (it’s giving Uncanny Valley, but we don’t hate it), which isn’t too dissimilar from the ‘Create a Sim’ function in the Sims.

After creating your Hogwarts alter ego, you’ll be able to begin your journey as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and embark on countless missions and explore the expansive game maps.

But how does this new game fare against the classics? You’ll just have to play it to find out!

Hogwarts Legacy: Official release dates

Hogwarts Legacy is now available on most of the big gaming consoles, including: PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC (as of Friday the 10th of February, 2023).

Unfortunately, Hogwarts Legacy won't be available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch for a little while. Here are the official release dates:

  • PS4 and Xbox One: 4th of April, 2023 
  • Nintendo Switch: 25th of July, 2023

Here’s a rundown on the different Hogwarts Legacy video game editions available for purchase:

Standard Edition: 

  • Comes with the base game
  • For PlayStation users: If purchasing for PlayStation, you’ll also receive an exclusive quest

Deluxe Edition:

  • Comes with the base game
  • Early access: 72 hours of early access to the game before the official launch
  • Bonus content: You’ll receive the Dark Arts pack, which includes the Thestral Mount, the Dark Arts Battle Arena, the Dark Arts Cosmetic Set and the Dark Arts Garrison Hat
  • For PS & Xbox users: You’ll also receive an exclusive bonus quest

Does Hogwarts Legacy require the internet to play?

At this stage, no. Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player game that doesn’t currently have any online or multiplayer features.

You will, however, need the internet to download the game to your gaming console.

Downloading Hogwarts Legacy:

Depending on which console you choose to play Hogwarts Legacy on, the game will require around 80GB of data or more to download.
