Frequently asked questions about Columbus Direct travel insurance

Q1. What does travel insurance with Columbus Direct cover?

This depends on the level of cover you choose and the additional packs you purchase to tailor your policy. Some of the benefits covered in most policies at Columbus Direct include:

Q2. What pre-existing conditions does Columbus Direct travel insurance cover?

The short answer is: none.
Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered under Columbus Direct’s policies, unless accepted by them via written endorsement. To obtain this endorsement, you’ll need to complete a free medical screening questionnaire, either online or over the phone. This can increase the price of your premium, or you can opt to exclude coverage of your medical condition and any problems arising from it and pay the normal premium.

If you want to know more about finding travel insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions, have a look at Mozo’s handy guide.

Pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing medical condition by Columbus Direct, except if you have had complications in your current pregnancy. See the next section for details about Columbus Direct’s pregnancy extension package.

Q3. Does Columbus Direct offer cover for cruises?

Yes. Cruises are covered under your Columbus Direct policy for no extra premium. The only thing you need to remember, is that when buying your insurance, you must select a destination that covers any international waters you may be travelling into, even if the boat only docks at domestic ports. This way, you’ll be covered for medical assistance and even emergency repatriation should it be needed. But keep in mind, this coverage is not effective whilst you’re on Australian soil, i.e. in port. Medicare covers you there.

Q4. Is there an age limit for purchasing travel insurance with Columbus Direct?

Columbus Direct offer travel insurance to persons between the ages of 18 and 84 years at the time of purchase. Policies can also be bought on behalf of dependent children or grandchildren under the age of 18, as long as they are travelling with an adult for the duration trip. Persons under 18 years of age travelling without a legal adult are not eligible for cover with Columbus Direct.
If you, or someone you’re traveling with are looking for seniors travel insurance, check out Mozo’s comparison tool specifically tailored to finding competitive senior’s travel insurance policies.

Q5. What if I want to cancel my insurance policy?

If, for any reason, you decide your Columbus Direct travel insurance policy is not for you, you can cancel it within 19 days of purchase for a full refund. This is provided you have not commenced your trip, or made any claims on your policy. A refund will not be given outside the 19 day period. To cancel, all you need to do is return your policy documents to Columbus Direct, along with written confirmation of the cancellation.

Q6. What does 24hr medical assistance include?

Medical assistance covers in-patient care, emergency repatriation or curtailment, but does not include treatment or surgery which could reasonably be delayed until you return home.
Under Columbus Direct travel insurance policies, you’ll have access to 24 hr medical assistance, 365 days a year, through a phone helpline to Columbus Direct’s assistance company, Specialty Group Ltd. The helpline accepts reverse charges. If you have an emergency or need medical care while travelling, you, or someone you’re travelling with, will need to contact the assistance company within 48 hours of reaching a hospital. It’s important to remember this, because if you don’t, your claim could be reduced in value.

Optional travel insurance covers offered by Columbus Direct

Winter Sports Cover

If you choose to add the optional winter sports package to your policy, you’ll be covered for the following:

Keep in mind that for many of these activities, if you do need to make a claim, you’ll need an official statement from the relevant authorities, and in the case of loss or theft, proof of ownership.

Sports/Leisure Activity Pack

By adding Columbus Direct’s sports/leisure activity pack to your travel insurance policy, you’ll be covered for a number of activities not included in regular cover, including:

Some other sports and activities are included under standard Columbus Direct travel insurance policies, so read the details to see if the activity pack is necessary for you. Keep in mind, however, that Columbus Direct only cover amateur sporting activities, so professional or competitive sports are not covered under their travel insurance policies.

Pregnancy Extension

Travelling while pregnant? Columbus Direct’s pregnancy extension package will cover you up until the 30th week of your pregnancy. You’ll need to apply for this extension and pay an additional premium, but it will cover certain unexpected costs involved with pregnancy, including childbirth while on your trip.

With this extension, the regular exclusions relating to pregnancy are replaced with the conditions that:

A quick guide to Columbus Direct travel insurance fine print

It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the fine print when looking for travel insurance, because the exclusions can be just as important as the inclusions on your policy. Here’s a quick guide to some of the major exclusions that might prevent you from making a claim with Columbus Direct travel insurance:

Pre-existing conditions

Columbus Direct do not cover any pre-existing medical conditions, unless you have declared ALL of them at the time of purchasing the travel insurance policy and Columbus Direct have agreed to cover them via a written endorsement on your policy. If you’re travelling with a pre-existing medical condition, you can use Mozo’s tool for comparing travel insurance policies to find one that works for you.

Cancellations

You aren’t covered for change of mind if you decide you don’t want to travel anymore, but Columbus Direct travel insurance will cover you if serious illness or death, either of you or someone close to you, redundancy or official duty means you are unable to travel. If you’d rather reschedule your trip, Columbus Direct will also consider claims for the cost of rescheduling as long as it doesn’t cost more than cancellation.

Medical Assistance

You won’t be covered for treatment or surgery which can be postponed until you return home. Loss or damage to medical items like dentures, dental appliances, false limbs, hearing aids, contact lenses or glasses (prescription or otherwise) is also not included.

Luggage and Personal Items

Any baggage left unattended is not covered under your Columbus Direct travel insurance.  If your baggage is lost or damaged while in the care of a carrier, you need to notify the carrier within 3 days and get an official statement from them so you can make a claim later. Items like wheelchairs, prams, motorcycles and bicycles won’t be covered, and neither will natural wear and tear on your items.

How to make a claim with Columbus Direct

If you need to make a claim on your Columbus Direct travel insurance, you can do so for up to 30 days after you return from your trip, but it’s best to do it as soon as possible. You’ll need to contact their claims handlers, Global Claims Services Ltd, by email, phone, fax or post, the details of which are all readily available on their website.

They’ll send you a claims form to fill out, so remember to include:

When making a claim, remember to keep all receipts, official statements and proof of ownership that might be relevant evidence.

I lost a video, on return to Australia I claimed for it and as I could not get the same model I purchased the next $60 more expensive, they gave me a full refund. They are much cheaper than the others and having travelled overseas every year for the last ten years I think they are the best value for money.

This Travel Insurance company goes above & beyond. We started using them as they were very cost effective, much cheaper than the insurance companies recommended by your travel agent. The website is very user friendly, you get your quote instantly, can do it all online. We've been using them now for about 7 years, and have made two claims, both have been settled without any hassle at all, even our last claim, damage to our hire car, they even covered the admin fee that the hire car company charged us. We would highly recommend this Travel Insurance Company to anyone travelling either domestic or overseas. They are first class. Also, being underwritten by Lloyds of London, gives you peace of mind.
