Frequently asked questions about GIO travel insurance

Q1. What’s the difference between GIO’s Single and Family Travel Insurance policies?

When you buy travel insurance with GIO, you’ll have a choice between a Single Policy or a Family Policy. While the former covers you and up to one child or grandchild under 21 years of age, a Family policy will cover you, your spouse or de-facto partner as well as your children or grandchildren who are accompanying you on your trip.

Q2. Will I be reimbursed for a cancelled flight if it was booked using frequent flyer points?

Yes, if you are entitled for a cancellation cover then you will be reimbursed for tickets that you bought using frequent flyer or similar scheme points. You will get paid the cash equivalent of the points that are lost following cancellation of your ticket.

Q3. Under what circumstances does GIO travel insurance cover overseas dental expenses?

You will be reimbursed for your dental expenses if they are incurred during your journey overseas and they are incurred because you sustained an injury. But like other incidents, there are certain exclusions that apply to this section as well. For instance, your claim for dental expenses may be rejected if they are incurred in Australia or are recoverable from Medicare, a medical or hospital benefit fund or under any Reciprocal Health Agreement.

Q4. Am I eligible for accommodation and meal expenses if my flight gets delayed?

Yes, but it also depends on the duration of the delay. For example, you will be paid reasonable accommodation and meal expenses if your transport provider has delayed your scheduled transport departure time for 12 hours or more during your journey. You will however, need to provide a written report from your transport provider confirming the delay as well as the receipts for the incurred expenses.

Q5. Will I have access to an emergency support system if I buy GIO Travel Insurance?

One of the most important aspects of international travel insurance is to have access to an emergency assistance program. Fortunately, GIO understands this and provides 24-hour emergency medical and travel assistance to its customers.

Q6. What if I need to cancel my policy?

If change your mind after buying a travel insurance policy with GIO, you can cancel it within 30 days of the date it was issued to you, and you will get a refund for the amount that you have paid. However, you will not be eligible for a refund if you have already commenced your journey or if you make a claim under the policy.
