Mozo Review   Jetstar Mastercard Review

Last updated: 22 May 2018.

What's hot:
  • Multiple Mozo Experts Choice Award Winner 2017

  • 0% balance transfer rate for 14 months

  • 55 interest free days

What's not:
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer Rewards program fee

Mozo snapshot:

The Jetstar MasterCard is a low-cost card with the potential to earn cardholders some big rewards. Its low 14.99% purchase rate and discounted annual fee in the first year make it affordable to use, while the linked Jetstar and Qantas rewards programs are great for travellers. Plus it also offers a 0% balance transfer rate for a whopping 14 months. Its excellent rewards offerings and balance transfer offer made it an easy choice for the Mozo judges during the 2017 Mozo Experts Choice Awards.

Key features:

The Jetstar MasterCard offers customers the choice between Jetstar Dollars and Qantas rewards schemes. Customers in the Qantas program will earn one Qantas Point for every 2 dollars spent. Choose the Jetstar Dollars scheme and you can earn 1 Jetstar Dollar per $100 spent on eligible purchases.

In the Jetstar program, points earned are capped at 500 Jetstar dollars per year. If you've opted into the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, you can earn a maximum of 25,000 Qantas Points per year.

When it comes to the annual fee, opt for the Jetstar program, and you'll pay $69 each year. Choose the Qantas rewards program and you'll pay a $30 opt-in fee on top of the annual fee, bringing the price tag to $99 each year.

If you have existing debt from another card, the Jetstar MasterCard offers a 0% balance transfer rate for 14 months. At the end of that period, any remaining balance rolls over to the low 14.99% purchase rate and not the very steep 21.99% cash advance rate, which is fairly unusual in the credit card world.

Who it's good for:

The Jetstar MasterCard is good for travel lovers who want a cheap card with a simple and straightforward travel-based rewards program.

Any catches?

Avoid late payments as they will attract a $35 fee.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

I never received any of my Jetstar points as promised from the sign up. I have had a lifetime ban put on my card although card is not in arrears and it was because I missed a couple of payments after the death of my daughter. So I have been trying to lift this lifetime ban for 5 years as I am not a bad creditor, however I just get the same response sorry this is a lifetime ban and can never be lifted. They also send me my statements each moth stating about the Jetstar points that can be gained, I have never received any from the start, they also say my available balance that I can access but really I can't because of the lifetime ban. It's become a joke among my friends and family and they always encourage me to call them just so they can here me discuss my ban ad get sent through to different departments just to hear them say I will get a standard feedback letter sent in 14 days that never explains why the lifetime ban was placed but always states sorry this can't be lifted. It's been going on for years.

Not Competitive, Terrible Service, Why Bother

Two weeks after receiving my new card I was overseas and started receiving collections calls demanding overdue payments! It was awful, constant missed calls, no messages then finally reached someone who gave me harsh words. It was difficult to convince them that two weeks in and being overseas I hadn't expected a payment due and that it was a bit unreasonable. The points system is a shocker - good luck earning enough to use for anything, let alone being able to redeem them. They can only be redeemed in batches of 25 (after three years I have 58 points, so I can get a $50 voucher for Jetstar, wahoo). Not worth it AT ALL. Interest is the highest I've ever had on a credit card, it's not at all competitive. There is no ATM network and you are charged an annual fee. They are super-quick to call when there is a problem (like an overdue payment 2 weeks after signing up) but had to get hold of and call-centres are off-shored. All up: there are many better options, why go there? Don't bother.

The rewards program is good if you fly often with Jetstar but my transactions don't show on my online banking account for several days and the balance is never up to date. This makes it very difficult to keep a $0 balance to avoid having to pay interest. The customer service is outsourced overseas so you're out of luck if you need anything that isn't on the information card the staff at the call centre have access to.
